I keep hearing about one that's being "worked on" and hope to eventually see it... anyway, *if* it actually comes out, would there be a problem if I were to stick something up online showing how to install the thing on Slackware and then stick up some notecard generators somewhere?

(I'm asking *here* because this might be construed as "volunteering" for something. I'll certainly be using it, as will probably one or two other Dropline devs. We should be able to sort out just about anything on a desktop install. Actually, with a little tweaking on the Dropline end, we could probably make the user install "just work" with a few lines in the notecard.)

I dont see why not, as long as it doesnt actually reverse engineer any of the code itself, we already have guides on how to get the sl client to run under linux using wine etc, and i personally have that setup on one of my test machines, but thats using fedora core 4

Oh definitely no reverse engineering needed (except for the purposes of being able to accurately point out files are going to the wrong place or something--but that's not something I could ever imagine needing to tell _users_ to do). A script to itemize the files installed to kinda shoehorn a package inventory into the usual inventory system is as close to "reverse engineering" as I expect to have to bother.

Part of the reason I even mentioned Dropline is that we've gone to a bit of trouble to try and eliminate the most common configuration issues for desktop users... things like why can't I write to the sound device and so on (hence, pam_console on a typically non-PAM distro). Slowly but surely we're slipping more and more things in to kill those pesky issues.

I'm about to go install the client now and see what happens. Hopefully there won't be any crazy issues and the instrux will be relatively short.

Umm... perhaps your information is a wee bit stale. ;)
