Tateru Nino: Okay, thanks for coming along, folks. I'm going to try to keep this a brief meeting today. Everything's crazy out there, and we've all got things we need to be doing.
Torley Linden: hey everyone :)
Thank you: (via Charisma Heart))
Charisma Heart: Torley:)
Carl Metropolitan: Not me!
Sladen McLuhan: Wooo! Torley!
Torley Linden: Heya Mera, SignpostMarv, Charisma, Sladen, everyone :)
SignpostMarv Martin: noticed that Lethe got a mention in the article :-P
Ami Kawabata: Watermelon Girl! =)
Tateru Nino: It's not surprising that we have a lot of new people coming in. SL is the cover story for Business Week, and I'm told we're also in Newsweek...though neither print version has hit the stands yet.
Tateru Nino: Since the last meeting, up until midnight, we got 8,034 people...bringing us to 191,959.
Charisma Heart: woot
Shawk Pertwee: wow
Carl Metropolitan: Holy Shit
Torley Linden: hahaha
SignpostMarv Martin: that would probably have more significance if I remembered when the last meeting was
Tateru Nino: 1455 yesterday, 1219 the day before, and 1091 the day before that. I have the daily figures on a notecard for the whole month so far.
Tateru Nino: If you want it, ask me after.
Charisma Heart: omg
Tateru Nino: Up UNTIL the Businessweek/Newsweek press that would put us at 200K in 7.5 days. Now I think it will be sooner.
Charisma Heart: omg
Charisma Heart smiles
Ami Kawabata: I joined up because of the last year's Newsweek article. =)
Mera Pixel: and we will all begin to be rich when? :D
Tateru Nino: We have a whopping 38 new mentors this week, bringing us to 745.
Jadon Riel: I joined because of boingboing.net
Ami Kawabata: I joined up
Tateru Nino: Still 129 greeters - the greeter programme remains on hold.
Tateru Nino: 169 Live Helpers - up five again this week (our second intake of live help this year). No word on how many dead ones.
SignpostMarv Martin: ^Joined because of StumbleUpon and major boredom
Tateru Nino: And 23 new instructors, bringing us to 544 (not a patch on the 93 new ones last week)
Tateru Nino: Whew :)
Carl Metropolitan: I wish they would come and teach at NCI :)
Mera Pixel: :)
Tateru Nino: I don't know how many are actively teaching.
Tateru Nino: The greeter system (the selectors at the greeter hub on Help Island), and the HUD system for it is still off the air.
Tateru Nino: We just have to try to do our best to hook up new folks with greeters.
Tateru Nino: It's still being worked on.
Kaboom Pow: Is there a list?
Kaboom Pow: of greeters, I mean?
Tateru Nino: There are 129. You can see them in FIND > GROUPS
SignpostMarv Martin: ^it would help if volunteers could access a global volunteer chat to streamline the process
Tateru Nino: Mostly, if you know a greeter, ask them. If you don't, IM the mentor group. Some mentors are also greeters. Or you can do it yourself.
Tateru Nino: Anyone can do greeter duty if they have a mind to.
Mera Pixel greets
Tateru Nino: You know what's best for your new resident.
Kaboom Pow: Yeah, but we can always employ it. lol
Kaboom Pow: can't*
Tateru Nino: I think we've seen the last of the crippling Help Island bugs (fingers crossed). new folks can get there now, and they are there in droves.
Tateru Nino: Maximum staffing for the island should be about 7 volunteers...otherwise there's not enough capacity for the new folks.
SignpostMarv Martin: ^some groups of friends end up getting separated in the Waterhead shunt
Tateru Nino: Generally, we get by on 3 or four right now.
Mera Pixel: Max or Min?
Tateru Nino: Max.
Tateru Nino: 1 for every six new residents is a nice guide.
Tateru Nino: Unless you're overloaded.
Tateru Nino: Most of them are wandering about and learning, rather than asking questions the whole time.
Tateru Nino: That's the only real notices today...I do have a special discussion item, though.
Tateru Nino: It's just been brought to my attention that American residents associate 'GOV' with 'governor' or 'government'...which is frankly something that never occured to me when I pulled "Gathering of Volunteers" out of the air.
Tateru Nino: Some people apparently infer an unintended insult/meaning from the acronym. Therefore, the floor is open to new names. Who's got something?
SignpostMarv Martin: MOV
SignpostMarv Martin: (Meeting of Volunteers)
Ami Kawabata: meeting of volunteers?
Shoshana Epsilon: Volunteer Forum?
Mera Pixel: make it Volunteer Gathering. The acronym of VG will surely bring up attendance. :)
Nick Shatner: COV, collection of volunteers
Coal Nelson: VG (Volunteer Gathering)?
Jamie Marlin: Tateru? You might just recapitalize it.... GoV does NOT sound like GOV
Torley Linden: Video Games? ;)
SignpostMarv Martin: ^that might pee off Apple though (MOV)
Tateru Nino: I'm not sure capitalisation strikes deeply into the soul.
Jamie Marlin: :)
Jamie Marlin: It does with acronyms
Jamie Marlin: GoV does not sound like government to an American
Carl Metropolitan: SEX! (Meeting of Volunteers)
Mera Pixel: how about 'meeting for those that do not suck'
Shoshana Epsilon: Nonononono
Tateru Nino: Weekly Volunteer Gathering? Rabble?
Shawk Pertwee: Rabble sounds right
Shoshana Epsilon: I vote for Rabble
Charisma Heart: SLVA (Second Life Volunteer Association) and make a group that we can all access, greeter/mentors/live helpers, etc
Mera Pixel: weekly volunteer gathering is good
Shoshana Epsilon: No, not another group.
Tateru Nino: Group slots are a rare and precious thing. Most of us are maxed out.
Shoshana Epsilon: Not unless Lindens give us more than 15.
Jadon Riel: plus SLVA sounds like a Motorola product
SignpostMarv Martin: "gov" is the standard tld extension for Governmental website addresses
Kerhop Seattle: looks like Saliva when read quickly :)
Tateru Nino: Saliva! :)
Charisma Heart blinks wide eyed
Shawk Pertwee: almost fits
Sladen McLuhan: No, SLiVA, because we're a subset of all residents.
Shoshana Epsilon: I like "Volunteer Meeting"
Torley Linden: there is a planned group increase in the works, but it will take some time still.
Jamie Marlin: hmmm a group of whales is a "pod" - what is a group of volunteers
SignpostMarv Martin: VM = Virtual Machine
Kaboom Pow: Can we fit the word LOVE in there somewhere?
Tateru Nino: WVM, anyone?
Mera Pixel: is there an acronym that isn't already taken?
Ami Kawabata: is it going to be weekly?
Nick Shatner: a rabble is the plural of volunteers
Torley Linden: WVM would make for a nice logo, because of the way M and W are inversed and V is symmetrical.
Mera Pixel: I like WVM
Nick Shatner: er
Xandi Mars: how about mentors meeting
Nick Shatner: volunteer
Coal Nelson: Lots of Volunteers Event.
Mera Pixel: yes, Torley
Xandi Mars: why shorten it
Tateru Nino: I don't think anyone's taken JGHKJSHTTTIOVV yet.
Xandi Mars: takes seconds to type
Mera Pixel: that's my URL!
Kaboom Pow: lol
SignpostMarv Martin: WVM too close to WMV for my liking
Charisma Heart: hey marv?
Charisma Heart sticks her tongue out naughtily
Tateru Nino: WVG?
Charisma Heart smiles
SignpostMarv Martin: typos = Microsoft codec
Mera Pixel: and we care because?
Carl Metropolitan: vMeet
Mera Pixel: as long as it's not Government associated, we're cool
Coal Nelson: vMeet works.
Kerhop Seattle: yeah, vMeet
Kaboom Pow: who said MM (Mentor Meeting)? I like that.
Jadon Riel: vMeet, a Verison product
Shoshana Epsilon: This is more than mentors
Nick Shatner: it's not a mentor meeting though
Carl Metropolitan: Not everyone is a mentor here.
Ami Kawabata: but it is not just mentors
SignpostMarv Martin: M&Ms
Tateru Nino: Well, we're also for Greeters, Live Helpers and Instructors.
Tateru Nino: GILM?
Nick Shatner: MGLHI then
Shoshana Epsilon: GLIMM
Shawk Pertwee: "V" Volunteers its quite simple and says what it needs to
Tateru Nino: GLIMM is nice.
Kaboom Pow: yes.
Jamie Marlin: lol
Torley Linden: GLIMMer
Torley Linden: hehe
Carl Metropolitan: Yes--and we can eat live mice and have skin suits
Jadon Riel: V for Volunteer
Tateru Nino: Anyone loathe GLIMM with a fiery passion?
Mera Pixel: A Group of People Who Are Here To Help (AGOPWAHTH)
Carl Metropolitan: Or wear Guy Fawkes masks and blow things up
Kerhop Seattle: GVH - Gathering of Volunteer Helpers
SignpostMarv Martin: GLIMM reaper :-P
Charisma Heart: omg
Charisma Heart: lol
Carl Metropolitan: I loathe GLIMM with a firey passion
Ami Kawabata: something simple. =)
Carl Metropolitan: Seriously
Shawk Pertwee: one has to start somewhere
Xandi Mars: why not ..ask for choices and pick one during the week
Fairge Kinsella: What’s the second M for? In GLIMM?
Jamie Marlin: meeting
Shoshana Epsilon: Meeting
Nick Shatner: aw, we so have to go with GLIMM :(
Fairge Kinsella: Oh, sorry, meeting. I see.
Kaboom Pow: Just VM won't do?
Tateru Nino: Okay...Next week we'll have the 'Meeting formerly known as GOV', and everyone hammer out a name. We'll vote.
Kerhop Seattle: GVH is my choice
Xandi Mars: yes 20mins of this
Xandi Mars: lol
SignpostMarv Martin: VM = Virtual Marketing
Gxeremio Dimsum: Not that my opinion matters, but vMeet sounds cool and describes the event well.
Cup of fresh ground coffee whispers: Now THAT I needed!
Mera Pixel: just make a unique symbol and go all Prince
Charisma Heart: lmfao
Sladen McLuhan: How about VMent? For how we feel about volunteering?
Carl Metropolitan: VMent gets back to government
Charisma Heart: oi
Tateru Nino: So we /can/ work LOVE into it. Love Symbol :)
Kaboom Pow: I'm hooked.
Tateru Nino: But perhaps we would get sued...and people would get the wrong idea about 'love symbol' meetings.
Mera Pixel: maybe somehow say, 'it's not in reference to any government, get over it'. PC stuff is the pissah
SignpostMarv Martin: ^sticks up a vote for GLIMM
SignpostMarv Martin: ah wait
Gxeremio Dimsum: Or "The Weekly V"
SignpostMarv Martin: something came up on google for GLIMM
Coal Nelson: doesn't something come up on google for everything?
Cup of fresh ground coffee whispers: Now THAT I needed!
SignpostMarv Martin: http://www.glimm.nl/
Kaboom Pow: HOBO!!! Oh wait, that's taken.
Tateru Nino: Let's vote next week. Talk about possible names in the meantime. We'll probably end up with two or three clear choices by the next time.
Mera Pixel: this is going to end up with too many chiefs and not enough indians problem, just like everything currently volunteer related.
Carl Metropolitan: Every possible three and four letter URL has been taken, I believe
Kaboom Pow: I think Marv had it----> VG.
Mera Pixel: instead of making something good that will please most, it has to be just bad enough so everyone is equally miserable
Tateru Nino: If you all talk to each other enough during the week, we'll probably end up with a small set.
Charisma Heart: SLV - Second Life Volunteers, after all, that’s what we are, and yanno, its ridiculous to have to be concerned about every acronym, some people take insult simply because we exist at all
Jamie Marlin: There has to be some unused combination oq Q and X
Carl Metropolitan: You could just call it "Cult of Tateru" That way most people wouldn't have to use a new group slot :)_
Tateru Nino: Pff
Mera Pixel: gee, what an excellent idea Marv had with 'VG'!
Mera Pixel: holy cow
SignpostMarv Martin: abbreviation of Slave (SLV)
Charisma Heart: oi
Charisma Heart: marv, im gonna muzzle you
Sladen McLuhan: Go VG! I like it.
Tateru Nino: VG? Any mad objections to it?
Carl Metropolitan: vMeet!
Shawk Pertwee: nope
Shoshana Epsilon: s'ok
Tateru Nino: Does VG make you angry? Culturally diminished, or socio-economically marginalised?
SignpostMarv Martin: VG wasn't my idea
Ami Kawabata: VG sounds familiar
Charisma Heart: umm, maybe we should google it...
Charisma Heart grins wickedly
Shoshana Epsilon: It doesn't have enough letters in it. I feel deprived.
Carl Metropolitan: It makes me think of a term in the grading scale for comic books
Sladen McLuhan: I think it's Very Good.
Tateru Nino: It's a common term for Video Game.
Mera Pixel: yeah, VG makes me angry since I was the one who said it. :)
Tateru Nino: Pff
SignpostMarv Martin: Question: Why do we need a short thingy anywayz ?
Jamie Marlin dislikes acronyms in general and would stick up for "Volunteer Meeting"
Kaboom Pow: oh sorry Mera. :)
Fairge Kinsella: I am with Jamie <grin>
Tateru Nino: Because we're always in a hurry :)
Jamie Marlin: U R?
Jamie Marlin: :)
SignpostMarv Martin: just call it Volunteer Meeting and see what develops instead of forcing something then
Mera Pixel: and Coal...we're sharing the same brain tonight.
Coal Nelson grins.
Shoshana Epsilon looks at her toes.
Kaboom Pow: well, it definitely has a V in it.
Coal Nelson: I think we've beat this topic to death tonight.
SignpostMarv Martin: (VoluMe)

Mera Pixel: indeed
Shoshana Epsilon: Yay
Jamie Marlin will be happy with any choice
Jamie Marlin: :)
Mera Pixel: I was happy with GOV
Tateru Nino: So was I. Ah, well.
SignpostMarv Martin: seems like something LL would use
Charisma Heart wonders how WA and HI are doing
Mera Pixel: no calls for help
Tateru Nino: Okay. VG meeting. We'll try it. Next week you have a chance to wrastle for something else.
SignpostMarv Martin: >_<
Kaboom Pow: So Mera's the hero?
Mera Pixel: not exactly since it was said two minutes into the discussion and we're not 20 minutes later. :)
Mera Pixel: not=now
SignpostMarv Martin: ^aims the gun at the topic to kill it
Kaboom Pow: I like it 20 minutes later...so it's a keeper. :)
Tateru Nino: And that's all the time I have set aside for stuff today. Going to stop the log, but you can bring up anything you've got a mind to, if you feel you've got the time.
