Tateru Nino : Usual rules apply. Respect everyone's turn to speak. If you want a turn, ask Tat. If Tat tells you to hush or pipe down, please do so. We all get a chance that way.
Tateru Nino : Got some new faces in the volunteer corps this week and last. 60 new mentors.
Tateru Nino : Only 2 new greeters, mind.
Tateru Nino : Now...on the subject of greeters...It probably comes as no surprise that the greeter selector at the greeter hub is not working right now.
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Kamael Xevious gasps.
Tateru Nino : It's prone to crashing at the oddest times, and has a whole spectrum of not-workingness that doesn't actually involve crashing completely.
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Tateru Nino grimaces. Please, be patient. It is being worked on. I am led to understand a couple Lindens are losing all their hair over it.
Tateru Nino : In the meantime, get greeters for people however you can, or escort them to the mainland yourself.
Tateru Nino : When the system /is/ fixed, it should be great. For now, it's just tempting to attach smoke particles to it.
Angelique LaFollette: I have some.
Toy LaFollette: hope into LH and we can usually find a greeter and Lindens are always available there
Toy LaFollette: hop*
Tateru Nino : Ah. Next item: Apparently HELP > LIVE HELP does not work for 90% of people on Help Island. No feedback on this bug yet, except that nobody quite seems to know why.
Tateru Nino : It appears to work, but it doesn't actually get to a Live Helper or Liaison.
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: ....great
<u>Spiderkitten Mirabeau</u>Tateru Nino gestures helplessly. I've been promised an update on that.
Ginny Gremlin: that’s what happened?
Ginny Gremlin: I asked live help something the other night and got no answer
Tateru Nino : Will pass along anything I hear. It might have been fixed recently and I hadn't heard, but it wasn't working when I tested it yesterday.
Tateru Nino : Either that or the live-helpers and liaisons just don't love me, and that's too bizarre to contemplate :)
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: lol
Ginny Gremlin: lol
Sean Gorham: unpossible!
Ginny Gremlin: does that hold true for off the island as well/
Ginny Gremlin: ?
Tateru Nino : Apparently it works fine everywhere else...Including on Orientation Islands.
Toy LaFollette: no, its working fine off HI
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: That's weird!
Angelique LaFollette: Very.
ASCIIrider Hailey: So, it's something with the server communicating with others sounds like
Sean Gorham: perhaps it's related to that bug where people see you as offline when you're on HI.
Ginny Gremlin: is there a need for more greeters?
Tateru Nino : Sean might have it.
Tateru Nino : Hard to say, Gin. 127 would seem to be sufficient. The problem is linking them up with their customers.
Tateru Nino : Greeter selection is still available off the website, but it's got a miss rate of something like 8 or 9 out of 10, I am told.
Tateru Nino : People change their minds, or never hook up with their greeter.
Sean Gorham: ouch.
Tateru Nino : Hence the inworld system - which will be wonderful...when it works.
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: well....newbie brain...if no result in 3 seconds, then ignore
Tateru Nino : Next item. A reminder for those of you who do not know. Your home will be reset anytime you leave Help Island. Still. Until further notice. Not everyone is across that yet.
Tateru Nino : Bonus points for that software system having a brief flutter yesterday.
Sean Gorham: still? o.O
Tateru Nino : There's still close to a thousand newbies with their homes set to HI.
Sean Gorham: ack!
Tateru Nino : Personally, I'd rather fix that with a database query. Which is probably why they don't let the likes of me near things :)
Tateru Nino : "Aww... but it would only take 12 hours or so to run....."
Angelique LaFollette: Ah,,
Tateru Nino : I presume direct, bulk database manipulation is too costly to contemplate in this case.
Ginny Gremlin: i've run across a few newbies now that have returned to HI
Ginny Gremlin: they wanna know why
Ginny Gremlin: one fella was really lost
Tateru Nino : I tell them 'A temporary glitch'. It won't happen again.
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Tateru Nino crosses her fingers.
Angelique LaFollette: Until the next time it does.
Tateru Nino : True.
Tateru Nino : We'll still get some of that thousand or so back over the next....however long.
Tateru Nino : I figure after a certain amount of time the system will be changed. How long? If I had to guess, I'd say 6-7 weeks.
Sean Gorham: ugh.
Tateru Nino : You may curse under your breath at your leisure. It's a mature sim, and it will keep Fairge entertained when she preps the logs for posting :)
Tateru Nino : No performance information from the trial of Help Island the weekend before last is yet available. Jeska's at a conference for the rest of this week. (ETECH, I believe). Next meeting we should have the numbers.
Tateru Nino : Possibly by the monthly mentors meeting.
Tateru Nino : Alright. That's the main business I've got. Anyone who works Help Island and does not have the communicator and cards, contact me after. Now. Discussion item.
Tateru Nino : Angelique's got an issue to bring up. Anyone who also has discussion items to raise, IM me.
Tateru Nino : Angelique? Go.
Angelique LaFollette: Thank you Tat.
Angelique LaFollette: I Love SL,,
Angelique LaFollette: I've learned a Lot since i've been here, and i want to share that with others, that's why i Became a mentor,
Angelique LaFollette: I want New people to Have as Good a time here as i do.
Angelique LaFollette: And feel as at home here as i do,
Angelique LaFollette: Recently though,
Angelique LaFollette: On two separate occasions, I've heard things, that can Only make the newbies who heard them reconsider whether they want to be here or not.
Angelique LaFollette: Sometimes we hear volunteers saying things like: "Oh, you should know there's a strong anti-<insert thing here> trend among the residents"
Angelique LaFollette: That thing could be furries, goreans, christians, pagans, gays, lesbians, democrats, republicans, blacks, asians or pretty much any social/political group or subculture,
Angelique LaFollette: most of which exist in SL in one form or another.
Angelique LaFollette: It's true that we all have our personal tastes and distastes, and for every subculture there are some people who are against it.
Angelique LaFollette: Is it appropriate for us to say something like this to a new resident, and have them feel like their personal preferential subculture, race or creed is extensively singled-out and frowned upon in SL?
Angelique LaFollette: I'm Gay,
Angelique LaFollette: A Woman, Black, and Catholic.
Tateru Nino : Hold your comments a moment, until Angel says she's done.
Angelique LaFollette: If someone told me on my first afternoon here, that any of these groups Faced Daily hostility,
Angelique LaFollette: I wouldn't be here now.
Angelique LaFollette: I May have experienced some prejudices here,,
Angelique LaFollette: But those were isolated Incidents, Not the General climate of SL,
Angelique LaFollette: and it would be wrong of me, As a mentor, to Warn people in this fashion based upon a few isolated Incidents.
Angelique LaFollette: I Remember,
Angelique LaFollette: I'm wearing Linden Labs Coat when i'm doing this.
Angelique LaFollette: What i'm saying isn'r perceived as My Personal Opinion,,
Angelique LaFollette: But as LL policy.
Tateru Nino : When Angel's done. Signal you want to speak. We'll go in turns.
Angelique LaFollette: So i try to be careful.
Angelique LaFollette: I want people to Want to be here,, Not feel Uncomfortable, or afraid to be here.
Angelique LaFollette: Thank you for Listening.
Toy LaFollette: :)
Tateru Nino : Who wants to coment?
RodneyLee Jessop: I do
Tateru Nino : Rodney, go ahead.
Tateru Nino : Say when done.
RodneyLee Jessop: What is the thought on mentioning Griefers and getting caged things like that
Angelique LaFollette: I believe gamers expect griefers,,
Toy LaFollette: if they ask I wont lie to them, it does happen
Angelique LaFollette: and suggeting people read on the customs of the sim they enter isn't a Bad idea.
Tateru Nino : Griefers, louts, yahoos. They are in every place.
RodneyLee Jessop: wasn't sure had a few NB's scared
ASCIIrider Hailey: One thing people need to realize though this is not a game, it's an online community
RodneyLee Jessop: was taught best defence was to sit and laugh
Toy LaFollette: :)
Angelique LaFollette: Ok,,
Ginny Gremlin: If asked what its like on the mainland I always say its like a giant community
Ginny Gremlin: and like any community has good and bad things in it
Tateru Nino : Rod? You done there?
Angelique LaFollette: Allow me to Read this for you,,
Angelique LaFollette: It's a Chat,, the Mentors name has been Deleted.
RodneyLee Jessop: yes
Sladen McLuhan: My thought is that people need to be aware of what _could_ happen, and that it is OK for them to say no - ie that they have some recourse when things are going badly.
Angelique LaFollette: "XXXXXXX XXXXXX: since we're on the subject"
Angelique LaFollette: "XXXXXXX XXXXXX: be very careful in SL"
Angelique LaFollette: "XXXXXXX XXXXXX: there is a VERY anti-christian feeling
Angelique LaFollette: That was from a Mentor to a person who had created within the Hour.
Sean Gorham: ...
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: wow
Ginny Gremlin: wow
RodneyLee Jessop: crazy
Angelique LaFollette: How Many of you agree that this is an appropriate thing to say?
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Sean Gorham has a comment.
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Spiderkitten Mirabeau nods
ASCIIrider Hailey: honestly I think that mentor should be reported
RodneyLee Jessop: yes
Ginny Gremlin: totally inappropriate
Tateru Nino : I vote no. Not appropriate. However I concede that they may believe it to be true.
Angelique LaFollette: And as i have said, I have heard it said with another identifiable groups name in place of Christians as well.
Angelique LaFollette: "Believe"
ASCIIrider Hailey: I can relate.. I'm a Pagan, and RL and SL thinks we're all devil worshipers
Angelique LaFollette: But as a mentor, he is speaking with LL's voice.
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Tateru Nino takes a turn to speak.
Tateru Nino : I met a fur one day who felt he had been rejected and persecuted all over the mainland. He was civil, urbane, and pleasant. But his experience of SL was of a place hostile to his subculture.
Angelique LaFollette: And yet i Know several Furs who are of the Opposite opinion.
Tateru Nino : He told me of his experiences, and I have no doubt that they were the truth. Yet I do not tell people that SL is hostile to furs. That would be self-fulfilling prophecy.
Tateru Nino : Done. Next to speak?
Mera Pixel: Sean had a comment.
Tateru Nino : Sean.
Sean Gorham: yes, in response to Angelique, i agree, that mentor's comments were inappropriate.
<u>Sean Gorham</u>yankee Faulkner may I
Sean Gorham: however, i also think it's important to tell new residents, if asked that it IS a wide range of cultures out there on the mainland.
Sean Gorham: i see it more as a problem of presentation, i guess.
Sean Gorham: personally i've never run into discrimination like that, and anyone who knows me knows that i run around in all sorts of avs - male, female, black, white, whatever.
Angelique LaFollette: I would present it as Opportunities, Rather than Hazards.
Sean Gorham: but it doesn't surprise me that this DOES go on.
ASCIIrider Hailey: has a comment when everyone else has had their turn
Toy LaFollette: Our personal opinions shouldn’t be made when we are representing LL
Ginny Gremlin: may I say something?
Sean Gorham: personally i try to emphasize the positive aspects of it, while at the same time letting them know that, no, it's not a perfect world anymore in SL than in RL.
Sean Gorham: i'm done.
Angelique LaFollette: I think Yankee had something?
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Tateru Nino nods. yankee?
yankee Faulkner: in sl i feel it is a experience
yankee Faulkner: and for all to find there experience
yankee Faulkner: sorry that’s it
Tateru Nino : I like to take the opportunity with a new person to convey a message. "Tolerance. Respect. Civility." He or she can put lingerie on their heads and call themselves the Queen of Cheese, and I will smile at the variety.
Tateru Nino : Next?
yankee Faulkner: yes
ASCIIrider Hailey: think there was someone else before me
Ginny Gremlin: I like to refer them to find
Ginny Gremlin: and tell them they can locate anything they are interested in there
Ginny Gremlin: without mentioning any particular thing
Angelique LaFollette: I do also, No matter the group asked for.
Tateru Nino : Alright. ASCIIrider.
ASCIIrider Hailey: ty
ASCIIrider Hailey: Well going back to Angel's speech
ASCIIrider Hailey: Yes I can see a lot of anti this stuff in SL, and I was even one of them at one time, I was VERY Anti D/s when I came in
ASCIIrider Hailey: the reason was, I didn't understand it at all, I was ignorant of what it was
ASCIIrider Hailey: however I've learned about it, and have changed my tune, most people just need to find out the facts
Angelique LaFollette: You would laugh, I was recently shown the door at my D/s group, because they decided they didn't Want Lesbians around.
ASCIIrider Hailey: I still have very little respect for Gorean though since it debases women
Ginny Gremlin: I find as a mentor, it isn't for me to judge what the different cultures do
ASCIIrider Hailey: and one last thing then I'm done
Angelique LaFollette: We ALL have experiences like that, Or know someone who has had.
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Sean Gorham nods.
ASCIIrider Hailey: well I don't go telling new residents stay away from gor, just cause I don't like it
Angelique LaFollette: But because they happen, doesn't make them the Norm in SL.
Sean Gorham: sometimes it's difficult to be neutral on issues of tolerance when you've been affected by that same intolerance.
Angelique LaFollette: Agreed.
ASCIIrider Hailey: ANd with the furry who felt outcast. I have a few furry friends and I think the reason why is there's a strong anti-gay feeling with a lot...and found out a large number of furries are alternate lifestyles
Angelique LaFollette: But we DO have a responsibility that comes with being a Mentor.

ASCIIrider Hailey: so that may explain the animosity to them in general
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: But...the point that on HI we should try and be at least a bit neutral, right?
Sean Gorham: a large part of SL is alternate lifestyles. SL itself IS an alternate lifestyle, in one sense.
ASCIIrider Hailey: on HI we're supposed to help
Sladen McLuhan: Sadly, we are a moderate group. We need to find a way of spreading our tolerance to the mentors who don't attend these meetings and will not in general listen.
<u>Sladen McLuhan</u>Sean Gorham nods.
Toy LaFollette: not only HI.... anytime we are wearing our titles... we represent LL
ASCIIrider Hailey: actually ANY time we have a SL sanctioned tag on we shouldn't be speaking our open minds to people
Angelique LaFollette: My Lifestyle has no place on Help Island, i leave it at home when i am there.
Tateru Nino : God, we're a pack of conniving moderates :)
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Spiderkitten Mirabeau nods at Slade....that's true
ASCIIrider Hailey: and I'm done
Sean Gorham: yes tat, we're just awful. :P
Tateru Nino : Woo!
Tateru Nino : Mera next.
RodneyLee Jessop: I cannot stand Polygons!
Ginny Gremlin: you just made me laugh out lout
Ginny Gremlin: pack of conniving moderates
Mera Pixel: Oh. thank you.
Sean Gorham: and given that we're all volunteers, not everyone remembers the corporate LL line when it comes to issues like this.
Angelique LaFollette: That's like being a Militant Pacifist, isn't it?
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Sean Gorham chuckles.
Toy LaFollette: :)
ASCIIrider Hailey: or swearing to God you're an atheist?
Tateru Nino : Hush a mo. Let Mera have a go :)
Mera Pixel: Well, I think we all here agree that this sort of passing along of our personal views is inappropriate. In context, we would also consider it inappropriate to tell the new guy at the office that this job sucks.
Tateru Nino : Ooo. There's a line there :)
Mera Pixel: But my question becomes, what action should or *can* be taken when this sort of thing is encountered or overheard by a representative? This group seems to be in agreement, so us agreeing doesn't fix anything, so to speak.
Tateru Nino : I have an answer.
Toy LaFollette knows this answer she thinks :)
Tateru Nino : If you see something you think is probably wrong. Inappropriate behaviour on the part of a volunteer (or even a Linden), skirt that is "too close to the string" so to speak...
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Tateru Nino can hear Sladen snickering from here.
Tateru Nino : AR it. Let the people who are paid to make these judgements make them.
Tateru Nino : If you think it's borderline then it /might/ be over the line.
Tateru Nino : Thoughts?
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: Ooh.
Sean Gorham: it's better than nothing, i suppose.
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: Cruel but fair.
Ginny Gremlin: I don't like it
<u>Ginny Gremlin</u>Kamael Xevious raises his hand.
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: Could be a little over the top tho
Sladen McLuhan: It seems a bit unfortunate to have to clean up after the fact.
Ginny Gremlin: then we become snitches on each other
ASCIIrider Hailey: Reporting 'em works for me... just because we're volunteers doesn't mean we're above the rules ourselves
Toy LaFollette: snitching has nothing to do with it.... doing what is right is what should be considered
Angelique LaFollette: As harsh as it may sound,, I agree.
<u>Angelique LaFollette</u>Kamael Xevious raises his hand.
Tateru Nino : An AR isn't a punishment. It brings the attention of someone who is supposed to make those choices to something that may (OR MAY NOT) be an issue.
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: If we're going to do that, don't we have to make sure people know 'the rules' beforehand? That it's not really acceptable?
Toy LaFollette: maybe speak to the person first
<u>Toy LaFollette</u>Kamael Xevious waves his hand frantically.
Tateru Nino : Kam?
ASCIIrider Hailey: if you're a SL volunteer shouldn't you know them? we're the ones who are supposed to set the example
Kamael Xevious: I have real issues with ARing.
Kamael Xevious: What we were shown was inappropriate, true... but also taken out of context. I won't make a complete judgement based on what I read.
Kamael Xevious: That said...
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: In *theory* Hailey (sorry Kam)
Sladen McLuhan: No, tolerance of other people's subcultures /is/ a part of LL policy - community standards
Kamael Xevious: How does something like talking badly about SL constitute abuse? Wouldn't it be better to IM the offender and object there?
Kamael Xevious: Maybe they aren't aware of how it's being taken.
Tateru Nino : Maybe.
Angelique LaFollette: I think THAT is the key.
Kamael Xevious: Or maybe only part of the convo was overheard.
Kamael Xevious: I think it should be brought to their attention first.
Sladen McLuhan: I think IMing the person is like us having responsibility without power.
Angelique LaFollette: They aren't used to being seen as an extension of SL Management.
Kamael Xevious: And then perhaps to Tat's or Jeska's attention if there are repeat offences.
Sladen McLuhan: What do we do if they just say no?
Kamael Xevious: I really don't see this as Abuse, but as not properly representing LL.
Kamael Xevious: There's a huge difference there.
Tateru Nino : Kam's right. There is.
Gus Plisskin: Talking badly about SL doesn't constitute abuse by itself. It'd have to be disruptive of an ongoing event or similar to be AR'able.
Angelique LaFollette: In our case, We see the new people at their most Impressionable stage.
Mera Pixel: But as a representative, you're held to a higher standard, so it *could* be abuse in that context. new people are looking to you for guidance.
Gus Plisskin: Yes, Mera. That's a completely different case.
Angelique LaFollette: Much of what we say to them, Or how we treat them will colour their future impressions of SL.

Tateru Nino : However we have been encouraged to use the AR tool on any resident or LL employee we /feel/ is or might be behaving inappropriately.
Kamael Xevious: True... but it's not a TOS violation or a Community Standards violation.
Sean Gorham: right now we have only one official tool for dealing with these situations - the abuse report. we have a hammer, everything gets to be a nail, whether we want it to or not.
Gus Plisskin: One should always politely ask about behaviour. Many will stop their annoying behaviour if asked nicely.
Kamael Xevious: Exactly.
RodneyLee Jessop: true
Tateru Nino : Agree.
Ginny Gremlin: Agree
Mera Pixel: the "annoying neighbour" approach. you hate to deal with them but you're forced to. :)
Sean Gorham: yes.
Toy LaFollette: :)
Angelique LaFollette: So,, Be Diplomatic.
Tateru Nino : You must all be nice neighbours. I command it....err...really.
Tateru Nino : :)
Angelique LaFollette: Another skill we need for Mentoring
RodneyLee Jessop: May I
Tateru Nino : Yes, Rod?
Kamael Xevious: I would just rather us be self-policing on this issue and only bring in Lindens when/if the person in question refuses to cooperate with the standards of the group.
RodneyLee Jessop: some one was talking the other day, they used the phrase "you Uglies" it was kinda weird coming from a dwarf
RodneyLee Jessop: do some hate pretty Av's or what?
RodneyLee Jessop: done
Angelique LaFollette: No one really sits down with New Mentors though, and gives us Guidelines for what we should, or indeed should Not do.
Toy LaFollette: maybe just pulling someones chain :)
Tateru Nino : I am collecting snaps of the dwarf/ogre/troll avs. The generally misshapen ones.
RodneyLee Jessop: I think its a subculture
Sean Gorham: very true, Angelique. there's no volunteer orientation - a HUGE lack on LL's part, in my opinion.
Kamael Xevious: I agree.
Ginny Gremlin: when Tat and i started
Kamael Xevious: ESP. in the case of Live Help.
Gus Plisskin: In another virtual environment, a game, volunteers received classes before being set loose.
Ginny Gremlin: we learned by watching the other mentors
Tateru Nino : Rod, there are so many, I think it qualifies even if they do not feel like part of one.
RodneyLee Jessop: TY
Angelique LaFollette: I work in Public service oriented security in RL,,
RodneyLee Jessop: it was interesting
Angelique LaFollette: so this sort of do's and don'ts is already familiar to me.
Tateru Nino : Sladen here has her mentor tag, but is still watching us and learning. Mera's not old enough yet, but is watching and learning too.
Angelique LaFollette: Then this is a Good topic for them.
ASCIIrider Hailey: Heck, I remember when SL didn't have much in the way of any help... had to learn it all yourself
Mera Pixel: just watch out when I am!
Angelique LaFollette: Lol.
Tateru Nino : Short of interning with another volunteer, there isn't anything. I try to help out new volunteers however I can. Some of you suffered my instruction :)
Angelique LaFollette: We warn of people doing things likely to get them AR'd don't we?
Angelique LaFollette: Give them a heads up in case they are unaware?
Angelique LaFollette: Why not with each other as well.
Sean Gorham: are we really saying here that we want volunteers to maintain neutrality when guiding new residents?
Toy LaFollette: I been doing LH, Mentoring and Instructing awhile.... and still enjoy it.... best advice I can ever give a new Volunteer is patience and common sense, use both
Angelique LaFollette: "I'm not sure that last comment to that newbie was entirely appropriate"
Tateru Nino : I try to. Volunteers operate under the TOS, the CS and the WA guidelines. On Help Island there are a few extra rules.
Angelique LaFollette: In IM.
ASCIIrider Hailey: Actually we shouldn't be neutral, we should be positive, not negative
Angelique LaFollette: Agreed,
Angelique LaFollette: We are the First people newbies see.
Mera Pixel: and don't say 'noob'
Angelique LaFollette: To each other,, Newbie,,
Angelique LaFollette: Out loud, New Person.
ASCIIrider Hailey: I like New Resident
RodneyLee Jessop: I like newone
Tateru Nino : As far as new residents are concerned we not only represent all of SL society, but we are also Linden Lab as far as they are concerned.
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Sean Gorham uses "new resident".
Toy LaFollette: I use New Rezzzies
RodneyLee Jessop: Raisens?
Ginny Gremlin: lol
Tateru Nino : New Entries or New Folks for me.
RodneyLee Jessop: popcorn
Tateru Nino : Sometimes Newbie, for brevity.
<u>Tateru Nino </u>Spiderkitten Mirabeau giggles. New sultanas
RodneyLee Jessop: popcorn
Angelique LaFollette: Tat,,
ASCIIrider Hailey: however some of the new residents turn out to be noobs (clueless and likely to remain that way... because they don't want to listen)
Angelique LaFollette: Perhaps a few "public service" workshops for Mentors in General?
Kamael Xevious: hear hear
Sean Gorham: absolutely.
Tateru Nino : This is almost one, Angel. Reaching the troops is a problem.
Sladen McLuhan: I like the sound of that.
RodneyLee Jessop: KO
Sean Gorham: yes. sadly, there's a few volunteers who think they know everything and are willing to let everyone else know that. loudly.
<u>Sean Gorham</u>Spiderkitten Mirabeau nods
Ginny Gremlin: yes
Spiderkitten Mirabeau: ....just want to second some sort of briefing for mentors tho
Tateru Nino : I think we can reasonably consider ourselves to have finished the meeting and be in random discussion mode
