I sure that this is in the wrong place, but here we go anyway,
So I’m a newbie, and I float away someplace private to practice SL stuff and I’m approached by some asshole who tells me that I work for him now. I say no thanks, then he puts this bubble around me and leaves me stuck. Is there a defense against these assholes?

Sorries to read you encountered this, go to Help in top toolbar and report for abuse, send a screenshot if you can, being trapped would be a good one!, it will prompt you for users' nickname, look it up, click ok, headline it form the offense menu and type in a descript of what happened, AND! teleport away! "bla bla w/e! cya!" Hell Mute them if you like too! hehehe Don't let ppls get to you, is your time, plenty of very nice ppls and fun times around, a head!

You can sit on something outside the bubble to get out of it. You can get a shield and anti push scripts also. Those help a little. There are other anti griefer tools also but then you are no better than they are.

And then simply teleport away, or if its your land, just ban him.

When you find yourself “caged” you can try a few things. First try to teleport out to another location. If you cant find something nearby to sit on and you can build on the property, rez a cube just outside the cage (select the Build button then touch the ground with the wand, close the Edit window) then select the cube and then select Sit. That will pull you out of the cage. Sometimes you can’t see what has trapped you so just turn on Transparent, Ctrl+Alt+T, making everything invisible appear red. Being able to see the cage you can select it and find the name of the owner. With that you can try an IM letting them know you want out. ”buddy let me out of the cage or I’ll AR your ass!”…then file an Abuse Report…lol. If nothing else works just log off and back on but be sure to log on someplace different then Last Location. And sadly you will just have to get used to the assholes without letting them ruin your day. Welcome to Second Life

Hi Worn, welcome to SL and the forums! A couple of things: -- Sounds like the guy put you in a "cage". You are safe from all such devices if you are already sitting on something, so next time you go somewhere to practice, if you can you may want to make a box and sit on it first. Sitting is the best and cheapest defense weapon -- Was it the gentleman's land that you were practicing on, or were you in a public sandbox? You can check to see whose land it is by right-clicking on the land and choosing "about land" from the pie menu. If it was his land, that may have been his standard way of treating unwelcome visitors -- If you were in a public sandbox, this sort of thing does happen quite regularly, sigh. Try some of the smaller ones instead. And make some friends ... friends' houses can be a great place to practice SL stuff. Drop by The Shelter or the forum cartel hangout and get to know some folks.

From: JayDee Unknown You can sit on something outside the bubble to get out of it. Unfortunately that doesn't really work anymore now . A few months back they changed it so that if there's a solid object between you and the prim you're trying to sit on, you'll just walk towards it, but you won't do the "sit through a wall" trick anymore. Anything with a sit target set on it will still work as before, but that distinction won't make a whole lot of sense to a new resident.

It was on public land, one of the islands off of the help area
But you can still teleport out of the trap? There is no defence against these sorts of thing?...

But you can still teleport out of the trap? There is no defence against these sorts of thing?... Yes, you can simply teleport away. And yes, the islands near the help areas are particularly vulnerable to griefers. Have you been to New Citizens, Inc (NCI)? Their location at Kuula has a sandbox for newbies which is policed, plus there are generally people around to help, great freebies, and wonderful classes. Or you can go it on your own and use Search to find different sandboxes ... just type "Sandbox" ... and choose one that is no-weapons, no-scripts. You may get insulted, but no one will be able to cage you or use weapons of any kind. If you are practicing building, scripting, or messing with your clothing, another defence, as i mentioned above, is to sit on something (standing on a pose stand counts as sitting too), then no one can cage you.

A convenient and easy to remember thing to create in order to have an object to sit on that will get you out of a cage is the Basic Chair in your inventory.
I wonder why they changed "sit through walls".

From: wALT Oppewall Crap! Why would they do that?!? Now I can’t get into peoples houses and touch all their stuff! Oh! That’s why * As Andrew points out in the JIRA entry, the sim (still) doesn't enforce the concept of "walls", it'll let you sit wherever you want when the viewer tells it to. * Already pointed out, but apparantly you ignored it: you can still sit on anything within draw distance that has a sit-target set on it. Most houses do actually have at least one piece of furniture you can sit on so it doesn't stop anything. * Also pointed out already: you can rez a prim, sit on it and simply drag yourself through a wall (a vehicle would work as well depending on the location of the root prim) Not being able to arbitrarily sit on anything does nothing to keep you out of anyone's house, the only true barrier we have is an access restriction or a ban. It does however keep you from getting out of cages easily, or get *out* of a locked house (will never understand why some people set their landing point inside of their house, or on a sim crossing you can actually fly through "solid" walls and get stuck in someone's house). On certain sims using the map to tp to a Linden road means you will get stuck *under* the road without any way of getting out again (you'd just sit on the road before, now it takes another tp). Arbitrary sitting also made it easy to quickly move through a largish build you're working on without having to actually snap the camera back to where you are and walk/fly to that point.
