“Make Offer” feature
Here’s something on our drawing board – wanted to get input from residents.
Feature: Ability to “make offers” on land or objects owned in world which are not listed as for sale.
Goals: * Support secure sale and resulting exchange between two specific residents * Allow residents to entertain offers on land or objects they own without specifically putting an object up for sale * Seems like fun to log in and check if you’ve received any offers or if any of your offers have been accepted
Proposed Design:
Upon seeing an object or piece of land you covet is not labeled “for sale,” you are able to select the object and “make an offer.” This opens a window where you can enter a numerical amount of Linden Dollars as an offer price and a short text field where you can add a message. Clicking “send” creates a binding offer to the object or land owner. The offer price must be an amount less than your current Linden Dollar balance otherwise you will receive an error message when attempting to send the offer.
The object or land owner will then receive your offer, noting the object/parcel, the bidder name, and the bid amount. The owner can Accept, Reject or Reply to the bidder as well as comment on the action taken using a text field.
“Accepting” an offer means that the Owner automatically receives the Linden Dollar bid amount and ownership in the object/parcel is automatically transferred to the Bidder. An “acceptance” will fail if the Bidder no longer has sufficient funds.
“Rejecting” an offer notifies the Bidder of the rejection.
“Reply” keeps the offer active but initiates an instant message-based conversation between Bidder and Owner.
Other Details: Once an offer is made, it cannot be rescinded but offers expire after 24 hours if there has not been a response from the Owner.
An open offer is immediately canceled if the parcel or object is modified by the Owner (or another Resident) in any manner (moved, edited, renamed, etc).
Residents can “mute” the sender of an offer message similar to muting other residents. You will not receive offer messages from Bidders you have muted.

I think this is a great idea! Often we have objects in world that we might not think are valuable, but could potentially be to other residents Very cool idea

I like this idea. I sounds like it could be extreamly useful, and would definately help with player-exchanged sales.

This is a great idea.
Suggestion: when making an offer, there should be a way to make an offer on the original or a copy and if it will be modifiable/copyable or not.

I like this! And I also agree with Wed's post about it... We should still be able to use the no-copy/no-mod privlage settings when making offers.

At the risk of giving away free consulting: The funds that are 'offered' will need to be encumbered (in effect, marked as 'spent') until such time as the offer is accepted/rejected or a reasonable timeout passes. If you don't strange things will happen when people make offers on multiple items, each costing less than their cash, but more (in total) than they could ever hope to pay. The 'encumberance' display will be kind of tricky, I think. Having designed and implemented online contract negotiations before, I've got a lot of experience with systems like this. Oracle Omega

I really like it. However here are a couple of ideas.
I think the option of more than 24 hr response is needed. Since it is the buyer who must make sure he keeps the appropriate funds for the appropriate amount of time I think he should be able to select from a couple options (1day, 3days or 1week maybe) or enter a text field for the number of days the offer is good for.
Counter offer. I may have something not for sale and get offered too little for it. I may be willing to sell for just a bit more or maybe a lot more. It would be nice if it was built in to the system.
=======
This is seperate but similar in mechanics I think. What about auctions? Set a base price on an item and a time the auction lasts. Then people can bid and see the latest bid.

!) If buying an object the person accepting the offer could cheat the person by acceptingthe offer and then instantly deleting the item (Since it is on their land).
2) You could plauge a person with offers of $1.

!) Bought objects should immediatly de-rez and appear in the buyers inventory.
2) Limit the frequency anyone person can place an offer. Maybe 1 per minute. And allow muting of offers.

I like this idea.... but please please please make it so we can tag objects or land that we simply don't want to sell so we don't have to be bothered with bids we wouldn't consider anyway. I'm not sure I want to keep having to explain to newer residents that I don't want to sell them my house.

Oooh I was just wishing for this the other day. How do you transfer land to another user of your choosing? If you release the land, the other user has to be right there or risk another user (innocently or not) grabbing it up first. If you put a sale price on it, likewise, some third party could grab it before the transaction is complete. The only workaround I could think of was to sell it for a ridiculously high price and then re-embers the buyer down to the agreed price. But it ought to be easier than this.

Isn't there a "Buy Land" button that you can choose on land claimed by another resident? I recently bought a plot of land directly from another resident instead of having to wait for them to release it, then buy it. But I'm still on my first cup of coffee and at w*rk, so I can't remember the specifics
