As every man who has been an expectant father knows, the only thing constant during pregnancy is change. In fact, the level and rate of change that occurs in your partner, in your relationship and in your feelings as a soon-to-be-dad are a little overwhelming to many men.
Some of the most important and noticeable changes happen in your partner's body. From physical changes like a swelling belly and breasts to mood swings to temperature tolerance, nothing seems to remain the same. This holds true for changes from pre-pregnant to pregnant, but also as time progresses in the pregnancy.
So what should an expectant dad expect as far as the physical changes his mate will experience during pregnancy (The monthly changes are for your reference only -- you may play it in weeks, or days instead of months).
Month 1: Subtle Changes
Within the first few weeks after conception, there are usually not that many signs that indicate the presence of a future baby. By the end of the first month, her breasts will be slightly larger. However, be careful with them as they are likely to be quite tender.
Month 2: Early Showing
A little extra weight is often taken around the hips in the second month, the breasts become firmer and a little bump in the front can begin to appear.
Month 3: Energy Drain
Your partner will feel totally zapped during this third month-her body is in overdrive as the baby begins to develop.
Month 4: Beginning to Be Obvious
This is typically the month when the whole world will begin to see the physical changes. Every woman is different and each pregnancy shows in different ways. It can depend on the location of the placenta and many believe that boys and girls create different shapes. There may be some new concerns like aching joints or skin problems. These are the result of the rapidly increasing levels of hormones in her system.
Month 5: The Best Month
Very often, the fifth month of pregnancy is the most enjoyable for both the mother and father. The baby is moving a lot and the mother has enough energy to enjoy the day.
Month 6: Feeling It More
You and your partner will see noticeable changes in her breasts. The breasts have gradually grown larger throughout the pregnancy under the influence of several hormones in the body. The progesterone hormone has increased the ducts within the breasts and from this point onwards, it is possible for a woman to leak 'colostrum' from the nipples.
Month 7: Discomfort
During this month as the baby grows more rapidly, you will feel some discomfort as your internal organs (lungs, liver, stomach, intestines) are compressed upward. This will only get worse as the baby gets bigger and moves around more often.
Month 8: Feeling Awkward
As the baby grows, mom's center of gravity changes. She will likely experience some lower back pain, and may have more difficulty getting up and down and walking. No, it is not Lag! You may experience some swelling in your hands and feet; you may need a larger sized shoe for a while! A dark line can sometimes appear between the navel and pubic hair. Also, some women find that the pubic hair actually grows right up to the navel.
Month 9: Getting Ready for the Big Event
During the ninth month, the breasts become heavier as they prepare to feed the baby. Your legs and back will tend to cramp a lot. Some gentle rubbing and massaging may help relieve the pain. The stretched skin on the belly will appear blotched and translucent towards the time of the birth.
