Night Sky Expedition, Week One
We noticed that while the society depended on hunting and gathering, almost every forested homestead featured land cleared to grow a type of wheat hybrid, tubers, a large fava-like bean, and arbors of plum-sized fruit. Even more remarkable were the jewelry worn by men and women: clever twists of rope affixed with beads, feathers, and perhaps a tooth or claw.
Some beads appeared to be metalwork, with soldered gold, copper or silver embossing. Where and how they performed this intricate metallurgy was not revealed to us; I suspect our warlike appearance, rifles and guns, sometimes held at the ready, dissuaded them from revealing much about themselves. But they were unfailingly hospitable, sharing crusty loaves of
bread and a potent heavy wine.
When one woman noticed how our archaeologist, Dr. Anna Brent, studied her necklace, she gifted it to Dr. Brent. We plan to stay here another fortnight, if the natives continue to tolerate our presence.
