Shout is not a viable method of gaming (rant)

This is NOT how to run a game. Using SHOUT. F'n noobs (actually more like inconsiderate fucks, noobs I forgive).
So here's about an hour of my time in SL today, was trying to test/debug/edit a new game I'm making. With 3-6+ scripts on screen, little corner for chat so I can see my debug messages, the shouts becoming fucking overwhelming. Lindens apparently not only think public displays of porn are good, but that shout spam != disturbing the peace, and thus isn't grounds for asking (forcing) people to use Say or whisper, or high chat channels, or just use common sense/curtiousy and realize that you aren't the only person in the world.
I'm fucking fed up, these idiots run shout infested "events" every day/multiple_times_a_day.
I hate socialites, now with a passion.

Sounds like you need to use the in-world mute list.

Simple to suggest. Simple, sort of, to use. Solves anything? Nope, not in the least.

Trust me I do use mute. I don't mute noobs/infrequent spammers, though. I've muted all the major shouters. However, this isn't a solution imho. I can't mute them all, some only spam a few times (problem is, there's a LOT of infrequent spammers, which, unfortunately, equates to a LOT of spam).

Heck, I don't even like muting the major spammers (game runners). It's not so much the person I want to shut up, it's their methods. They, no doubt, are generally great people. Just that they, apparently, lack:
1. The ability to script simple games to use high channels, say, or whisper.
2. Concern for others in SL. The "We shout because we can" mentality. (may or may not be true, I'm leaning towards #1)

When I do mute someone, I consider the amount of spam, I look at their profile, see if they're a noob, if not I then see if they're in the group (group that's running the game -- well "sub-group", they group their visitors into a basic minion flock). If they meet all my requirements to justify muting, then I mute. But again, it's not a solution, imho.
Now I do that after suspending my current doings -- scripting. And if you script (especially somewhat complicated junk) you know that interruptions suck. I tend to end up loafing and logging off (pissed) because my concentration is ruined.

Not that I'm condoning this kind of behaviour, but I think you missed an option. What about that fact that often Say isn't enough to reach all the people you want to, and there's nothing in between a Say and a Shout. Many have suggested before that there needs to be more options for chat. Most likely on a per parcel basis. Sounds to me like you need an option to temporarily block all chat that is originating from outside your parcel. Personally I think we're way overdue for some updates to chat functionality.

But, having a constructive response to a legitimate issue makes the forums a dull boy...

I completely agree but I haven't missed this option. 20m radius from the speaker is a LOT of ground. In most cases people attending these events (and just about any event) are bunched up well within 20m. Staging the gaming device central to everyone, and informing participants that they should remain nearby to hear spew is also an option -- much more viable than using shout, imho. Well, long as you're not self-serving and care about others in the area.

Chat really needs improvement. I'd love to see specific channels (like irc) where you'd do something like: "Everyone join channel MyGame, '/join #MyGame'". SL lacks in many areas, chat being one of them.

Chaimpie, I'm guessing your comment is directed at my "I hate you all" statement. Well, at the time of the writing, I did (in theory anyway). I was pissed, yet again. This is a daily occurance for me. I script, that's all I do in SL other than loafing (do a lot of that too). Interruptions on the scale that I get (of endless shout spam) has pissed me off -- and will continue to piss me off. Constructive responses are welcome though, Lindens actually enforcing noise pollution rules would be even more welcome. Why must others suffer because 5-20 people can't figure out how to use highchat/whisper/say and stay w/in 20m of a central point? My only recourse is pretty limited. Lindens won't do anything, I can't grief um (even though they can spam me, indirectly) so I get pissed and rant (note the subject of the OP). I rant, I calm down, although tomorrow's event(s) will probably get me ramped up again.

just use the mute the gaming will be turned off the host aren't that many, I had a casino behind my residence for the longest time and at first was upset that I was disturbed then after muting them, even though it took me a few seconds, I had the silence to watch my movie in peace, and guess what? They stay muted till you unmute them Then, of course, you can decide the color red is aggravating & should be barred from in game lol.

I agree, an arbritrary chat distance is something sorely needed - along with better parcel controls to handle/filter chat.

If I'm in a situation where the 20m chat distance is insufficient (and it often is), I use chat repeaters to carry the chat further, without it bleeding off my parcel.

Chat repeaters carry with them their own set of challenges, however - lag, and echo, and can be tricky to get working optimally. Still, extra time spent trying to be a good neighbor is time well spent in the long run.

Rather than shouting, they could just use a scripted relay system.

I dont know if 700m straight up is useful to you like newgate suggested, but finding somewhere else quiet to do your scripting may be a good idea....

Doing your scripting in the area you're describing sounds like trying to take my calculus homework down to my RL buddys Tattoo shop and actually concentrate- not happenin

there are plenty of places in SL (that arent 700m high) that are almost entirely devoid of ppl and noise...especially at "off" times of day, like 2:00am my time (pretty much SLT).

long story short, you could change what youre doing, instead of frustrating yourself trying to change what everybody else is doing....

However, the OP was making something, which means he needs the right and permission to build on the land. There aren't "plenty of quiet places" in that category, unfortunately.
