Hi, I'm looking for some suggestions on where to get started in combat in SL. I have played a few FPS games, but I'm not a big "gamer". I'm looking for some place fun, that doesn't take itself too seriously, and not TOO heavily into roleplay. Basically, I'm looking for a combat sim where I can have a good time shooting and getting shot at. Any suggestions? Thanks!

hehe, Stephanie, clearly you are not a big fan of or regular participant in PvP combat There are lots of great combat opportunities in SL, depending on what you are looking for... There are some very well-done combat systems that are entirely cooperative and do not rely on the silly Linden Combat System or it's damage- and push-enabled sims where you can expect to be teleported home within seconds. If you are looking for melee combat Samurai style, check out Samurai Island or Samurai Edo or Shrouded Isle. I am less conversant on firearm combat, but I have heard very good things about City of Lost Angels. I know there are others, though none come to mind for me, and hopefully some of their fans will chime in with a real answer in counterpoint to the very negative and not very useful one given above.

Robbie, it's more a matter of what the OP asked for. He said: "...that doesn't take itself too seriously, and not TOO heavily into roleplay. Basically, I'm looking for a combat sim where I can have a good time shooting and getting shot at". That rules out all the swordplay areas like Samurai island. It also rules out all the Role Play areas such as Tatooine (star Wars), all of the Gor areas, City of Los Angeles (for RP reasons). In fact based on the OP's request for combat area, little RP, doesn't take itself too seriously, somewhere he can shoot at and be shot at... the list drops to only a very few places of which Jessie & Rausch are top of the list. And since some of the best weapon makers in SL all have shops in Jessie (i've never been to Rausch so i can't speak to that, but i've heard that it is true also), and since people want to use those weapons right away, I would assert that it is a true statement that he will be dead shortly after arriving in those sims. p.s. As for being a fan of PvP in SL...... i'm a licensed AubreTec weapons merchant and my partner is a licensed TyroTec weapons merchant

Thank you both for your input. I realize what I'm looking for may be hard to find. I will definitely check out Jessie and Rauch, and be prepared for whatever might happen. P.S. I'm a she.

If you want to sort of ease into it, try the Linden's weapon testing sandbox. It's a no-combat area, but it's a good place to go to test out any weapons you have on targets. It's push only, not damaged enabled, but you can get some weapons practice and training before you head off to Jesse, or any other real combat sim (where you will probably be toast within seconds--been there, done that, got the hat).
If you'd like, IM me in-world, or check out my group, "The Consultants". We have a couple of members who do weapons and combat training, from the mild to the intense, after a personal consutation. If you're unsure of what weapons and systems are available, or what you might need, we can also advise you on that subject.

Yes better advice or you will be dead 10 times before you work out how to draw your weapon and fire. Then they probably have sheilds, so any freebie guns are going to be useless, unless you are lucky enough to find another new person, generally you stand there for maybe a minute before your unarmed AV is wiped by a 14yo flying a gunship

Just to update this thread -
I learned to stop worrying and love to roleplay. I'm not very good at RP, but seems a prerequisite to any decent combat areas. I also got into melee - I discovered I'm pretty good with a sword. So, I've been hanging out in Toxia. I'm still really surprised there are no places to go and have a fun pvp firefight that aren't overrrun by the cagers/orbiters/PKers.

I rp in Gor sims...and I am in A LOT of battles. I've been in about 50 in the past three months. Join one of the outlaw groups or mercenary groups. There is rp..it's unavoidable, but you'll have a blast! It's more the medieval combat..swords, bows, spears, whips, daggers, etc.
