I'm here to announce that there is a new hockey league here: the Virtual Hockey League of Second Life, or VHL for short We have a massive and amazing arena in Axenfall region where we are about to get teams together and begin play in March. Already over 30 people have signed up and we will have four teams to chose from. All skill levels and abilities are welcome and we'll have training time available so that you can get to learn the system (which is pretty easy). Contact me, Montecore Babcock, with any questions or if you want to join. Search for Virtual Hockey League or VHL in group search for our open enrollment group, which players or fans must be a member of to participate. Also, check out VirtualHockey.net for our official league website. Come have fun and make new friends

Slurl

I forgot to add that. Here it is: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Axenfall/171/117/36On the ground is a teleportation pad. You may have to turn around to see it. Click on the pad and chose "Ice Level" when the dialog box drops down in the upper right corner of the screen. Then click on the pad again to get your tp to the arena in the sky!

Hockey rink location
02-17-2008 19:48
I went by the rink, it is kind of confusing to get a tp to the rink but wow! what a job on how big that arena is. There are four event boards being used to sign up for teams now. The boards are in a hallway near the locker rooms right off the rink itself. There are four teams to sign up for - The Sim Crashers, The Brain Freeze, The Lag Riders, and The Polar Dogs. Obviously these folks have been in SL a while based on these names! It looks pretty cool, there are some instructions on how the league will be run and a few other things. If you have any interest in ice hockey, sports in SL, or how team events can be organized this looks like a great venue.

What is the relation, if any, to the SL Hockey league located in Jericho Hill? I was thinking about getting in with that league... they have training available and I've seen some pretty fun looking games held there. Your arena looks pretty realistic. Joined your group, look forward to seeing what comes next. BTW: how does one get a skybox!

However, there are players there that are also in the VHL. We will have live training sessions available before our season starts as well as throughout the season. Also, I am going to try and put together a video and some other educational projects as time goes on. But it's a reasonably simple game and shouldn't take long at all for you to feel ready to play. As for the rink, the width to length ratio is the same as it is in NHL hockey. And the arena is one of the largest in SL. Our aim is to give the players and fans a great experience! Oh, and the skybox area is open to the spectators for an extraordinary game view I'm looking forward to seeing you there. We'll continue to have updates in the group notices (Virtual Hockey League) and on our website: VirtualHockey.net -- Monte

VHL team signups
02-19-2008 04:35
I went by to sign up for a team at the ice rink. Is there a limit to the number of people that can play? I only saw four boards and it looks like only 8 people on each team? Is that right? There were already 11 people signed up so it doesn't seem like there are a lot of spots left.

Very cool--believe it or not, in three years in SL I didn't know there were actual sports events...I'll have to check this arena out.

Theres already 2 big hockey leagues SL Hockey and the EHL for Europe, both are long well established. How about someone starting an original league idea maybe in a sport thats not already all over, for instance I have'nt seen any basketball or football?

sports leagues

Quinn, I just checked and as i post this there are 46,000 people online in SL. If only 1/2 of 1% even want to play hockey - that's 230 people. In the last 7 days there have been 459,000 people online, that same 1/2 of 1% is about 2300. I'm not sure where you base your numbers that two big hockey leagues is enough? There are only 5 people active on a team at a time, with 10 players per team there would have to be 230 teams in 2 leagues to accomodate even 1/2 of 1% of all the active people on SL in one week. That's for any sports league. If you tripled the team size, say for baseball, you would have 30 people on a team that would still be 75 baseball teams!!! How many leagues would you need for 75 teams of 30 people each? Can you imagine the size of the administrative staff? The number of officials you would need?
These numbers assume that each person only belongs to 1 team on 1 league on each sport venue. It seems like a very general statement to stay that the two existing leagues are more than enough. And when you say football, do you mean the type played in the USA or the one played by the rest of the world? I have seen sailing venues and SLASCAR (car racing) and of course how can anyone pass on the snail races!

Hey all, I just checked and the teams still have a few openings available. I think there is talk of expanding the team size from 8 to 10 to accomdate all the people who are interested in playing hockey in Second Life.
