Hello,

I have just finished a Beta version of Buttonmen for Second Life. If you're not familiar with the game, it involves players rolling different sided dice and trying to capture their opponents'. Each player picks a buttonman character, each of which has a specific combination of dice. It's popular in the real-world, and full details can be found at http://www.cheapass.com/bpu/start.html.

The SL version has two aspects. There is a button (badge) that is worn and can search for other players in the area, and also holds the dice. On a command the dice are rezzed and the players can roll them/move them similar to real dice.

I have 3 characters ready for people to try and a vendor to give them away free, but what now? I don't own land and with the 'first land' backlog I probably won't for a long time.

If anyone can help or is just interested in trying the game then reply here or look for me in-world).

Thanks

Lucius

You should take the time to post this on www.GameSLaveWiki.com so more people can read about it. This seems to be a very interesting game. After reading about it, I'm still not 100% how it all works, but the concept behind it seems great!

Thanks for the suggestion. I wrote out a wiki page yesterday, but my log-in timed out and I lost it when I went to post :( . I'll try to re-do it again soon.

I've had several positive responses and have found this community very supportive in general.

Have you contacted Cheapass about this?

The reason I mention it is that I contacted the owner of the Button Men web game and they confirmed that Cheapass licensed them to use it for the web and nothing else, so they couldn't authorise an SL version. And Cheapass tend to send such enquiries to "the cardboard monkey" - did you have better luck with them?

Well, no.

I generally follow the principles of the Internet, being: always give credit to the original creators, don't make money off of anything that isn't your own original work, and stop if they ask.

The rules are freely available on many sites, so I doubt they're too concerned about that. The biggest issue would the imagery used on the buttons. Then again there are 'fanatic' buttons created by players themselves.

Maybe I should contact them. Did you look into creating an SL version yourself at somepoint?

Apologies, I've been away a while.

Having contacted cheapass games (who produce the real-world version of buttonmen), they are happy for me to reproduce the game system, but there are copyright issues relating to the imagery.

Because of this I started work on a generic system, and hopefully I'll find the time to finish this soon.

The result will be a chameleon button that can be set to whichever character the player wants. I also intend to create promotional versions, each of which will only available from a specific vendor machine in-world, and have unique imagery on it.

I'll update here when they are available.

They have a point there, Lucius.. some of the artists are pretty heavy hitters in fantasy art-- people like Phil Foglio and Larry Elmore. Some of the art was commissioned solely for Button Men but much of it (like the Elmore stuff) were existing pieces, so naturally they might be a bit sticky about reuse.

I love the generic idea, though and please keep me informed. I have a few button man buttons and would love to play this in SL.
