How about soccer? I expect it is a simple game to set up in SL. Scripts/animations for the goal keepers (so they dive for balls, etc.), scripts/animations for the players on the field (various kicks, headers, slides, etc.), boundaries to keep the ball from rolling away, and a way to keep the ball "stuck" on the player moves downfield with it. The offside rule might be a problem but I don't know.
I have no programming skills, but I am a big soccer fan (I love playing Winning 11) and would be willing to help a developer interested in building soccer in SL in any way I can.
There are various levels of grandeur we can do this on. Although we can keep it as simple as a field and a ball, there is a much greater vision and potential here. Here are some thoughts:
1. Soccer field/stadium. I don't own land, but I would help a landowner pay for new land for a field. Given that avatars run pretty fast, it might make sense to make a pretty large field. However, if everyone that is interested in seeing this happen contributes to the purchase, we could have a pretty large field. If builders get involved, we could even make a pretty nice stadium!
2. If the stadium is large enough, we can build in booths that we can rent out to people that could sell soccer-related merchanidise: real life team uniforms, SL team uniforms, flags, balls, hats, scripts/animations for the fans to cheer whistle and sing songs.
3. SL soccer league. Why not? We'll call it SLSL (Second Life Soccer League). I'd organize it. Soccer teams from different lands competing for the SLSL cup. Team rivalries. Professional teams with tryouts and paid players. Maybe SL games that are played in the stadium could be broadcast to televisions in SL bars and clubs in real time. I don't know if that is possible but if it could, WHOA! Imagine walking through SL with people talking about the last game, posters for the favorite team. It would be a great cultural element to add to SL.
4. Cost considerations. I think the cost for such a project could be covered by simple, low-cost pricing. I don't care to make a profit, just cover costs. To cover our costs, we can charge a nominal fee for people to play. If there is a league and teams, teams could pay to play. If there are booths in the stadiums, we rent those out to vendors. If people want to sit in the stadium, they pay for a seat. Clubs and bars that want to televise could also pay. There are plenty of possible revenue streams to help cover costs and I would want to make it cheap enough that price would not become a barrier that keeps everyone (players, spectators, vendors) away.
My mind is bursting with possiblities here so I should stop. However, this could be a fantastic adventure and a wonderful addition to SL. I am very energized and could definitely make this happen with help. I do plenty of project management in real life so I think it could be great.

Look around in Midnight city, you will see a soccer stadium includes ball, goals, score board, and even a uniform giving machine.

In Paroli, Italy, I'm taking part in the SL Soccer League, 8 teams of 5 players all battling it out to get the title of top team Well it sounded great, but I've been asked to be responsible for "PR" lol, the organising is a joke and it would help if they were people who actually knew about football and the practicalities of second life. Rather than letting friends stick together as a team, they insisted on putting random teams, oh plus the guy running it is in a team himself, so £50 says that the rules get changed at least once to suit them Ok apart from that little bitching there, it has the potential to be a nice little tournament

New Soccer field in Plusia
03-15-2006 09:51
A new soccer field was just put up in Plusia. The field is rentable and anyone can play. Even the scoreboard keeps track of the balls that make the nets! The person to contact is Anderson Danton. He will be looking to start a team soon.

Just in case anyone's interested in other sports, a group of us is working on setting up the SLHL, and we're not doing too badly.
I have to admit though, I am in a team, though hopefully I'll be able to keep personal interests from taking over the fairness of the game itself (No point in winning if you win a game weighted heavily in your favour by the rules...)

Soccer is not a matter of life or death. It's far more important than that. Good luck with this project - can't wait to see the outcome
