I have been toying with an idea... I want to "hide" 100,000 l$ somewhere in SL, and then sell a map that offers a clue as to where to look for the treasure. I assume that map would point to another..and another.. and another and so on. maybe have some puzzle solving maps, and item finding missions and whatnot, the first person to follow the little trail of clues all the way to the end gets a password to an account with 100,000 in ginko, or something like that.
so, thumbs up, thumbs sideways, or thumbs down?

I think it'd be good, but you'd have to be *really* careful that it's cheatproof. Whatever you do, don't rely on anything in-world for your clues, unless it's meta-information like names of places, etc. Get familiar with the Client debug menu so that you know what sort of things can be done on the client-side, just in case any of them scupper your ideas. You'll want to make sure, if you hide objects in SL, that you either have enough land to do that or that the land owners agree to it. It would be bad to have objects returned to you after you after you spent time carefully positioning them. Whatever you do, don't give the names of any items in your clues. It's very easy to write a script which scans 96m all around you for an object matching a particular name, and then give you a teleport straight to it - so, given the general area of an object, it's easy to find any particular named object. It pays to be aware of things like this. If you're aware of these things, then I'd love to have a hunt like that.

hmm... good to know.
I was planning on having two objects interact with each other (i.e you find a key and put it in a chest and you can get the contents out of the chest)
and chat based puzzles (i.e) you hear a riddle and you have to say the right password or something to get an item)
would these be pretty easy to hack?
also, anyone have any more ideas? I have more, but these two seem like they could be hacked pretty easy

I dont think you need to physically 'hide' anything in game. There was a treasure hunt previously, cant remember the location, which gave you shovel and a genie in a lamp. The genie gave you a riddle to work out which SIM to tp to and once there gave directional clues, hot, cold etc. When you got close to its 'treasure position' it rezzed a red cross on the ground. You dug at the cross and the genie recorded what you found. Returning to the start point allowed you to be paid.
It was very simple, no where nears as complex as your're describing but good fun. I lost a packet on empty treasure chests!!!
As an aside, a few friends and I are currently working on a similar idea but its only at the 'wouldnt it be great if...' stage

Perhaps Governor Linden would sponsor a treasure hunt. Who else but the technical wizards at Linden Labs would know all the details of how to set one up without running into those unforeseen technical glitches.

You said it, it should not be enough to get to final point (the 'X'): you need to collect the evidence objects on the way to it, like that reality TV show I can't say the name, but you know what I mean

From: Horst Geiger Perhaps Governor Linden would sponsor a treasure hunt. We don't need LL to sponsor anything but bug fixes and features. The more Linden Lab stays out of the business of entertaining the residents, the better off we all are.
