Like There.com
Hoops on poles Maybe a backpack worn that not only is scripted for better speed & direction but also to time and trigger the 'hoops' color & sound effects when an avie flies through them.
Would need a scripter and some-one who can design a flying backpack which also does the above and some land and builders.
Can race against other avies at same time or against the best 'timed' laps.
We cant really use cars in SL.
Unlike There.com the physics engine isnt good enough and doesnt allow for fly by visuals and the controls are unresponsive as u all know/
BUT we can & do fly but I dont see any ways of making this a feature to compete in?
Just an idea...but I saw the hover hoop tracks from There.com in my mind and again the physics is no way near as good as There even in flight the hover packs in There were very responsive and easily controled...and the hoops had green arrows inside so when u flew through one it went yellow and red and made a noise indicating you had succeeded in passing through it.
well? lol
I would LOVE to make this happen but really wouldnt know where to begin.

I disagree with this. I can fly my hover sleds through a 10x10 hollowed ring at 16 m/s without even trying hard. Its a mouselook flyer, BTW. Mouselook control, set up properly, gives incredibly precise control. - Jon

In reply to your original message, I have already started working on a race system for the blue hoverboard course in the vehicle park.
Attached is a map of the course, with the locations I've put in for checkpoints. I have mostly coded a race server that will sit at the start line, and rez the checkpoints. Each checkpoint will be told where to go, and it will fly there and set up, on the ground (it will be mostly transparent and phantom). The race server registers the racer, and then tells the checkpoints (via email) to start a sensor looking for that avatar.
Each checkpoint notifies the server when the racer passes the checkpoint. It also notifies the racer that they have successfully passed the checkpoint, via IM.
The race official (me) enters the official time for the lap (as recorded by the LL lap timer) to the race server (assuming they successfully passed each checkpoint), and the server keeps track of everyone's lap times and the standings.
I will also provide, at the start line, a sled rezzer that rezzes a sled for each driver as they are setting up to do a lap. That way, everyone uses the same vehicle, and driver skill is the only thing that affects the outcome.
You can try running the course now -- my vendor at Busy Ben's (lot 21) rezzes demo vehicles.
The official race vehicle will be the Marlin XS-1.
I hope to have this finished within a few weeks, and will be posting an official event notification when the time comes.

general feeling...

Whilst i cannot judge your game as I havent raced it i can speak for a few good vehicle designers of SL and my personal exp of a LOT of SL vehicles. Even the designers get ticked off with SL's LAG and poor physics engine. I gave up spendin money on superb looking vehicles (inc your snow mobiles) to be left stuck in a tree or under water. Maybe im not the best person to pass comment but the general feeling on SL vehicles is ' dont bother' until the Lindens improve that particular element of the platform.

Well, I share some of your reservations regarding vehicles in SL. I've spent some time in There, and I agree the vehicles in SL are not up to that standard. However, that being said, a lot of people have tried racing around the vehicle park in one of my flying sleds, and the comments I've gotten back are without exception positive. You don't have to take my word for it -- my vendor at Busy Bens has a free demo vehicle feature, so you can try it yourself. I think the trick to enjoying vehicles in SL is pickig the right sim/sims to fly in. The vehicle park south of Busy Bens is probably one of the best places in the grid for that. - Jon

physics ...

I have played both games.
Currently, do to the nature of the way Second Life delivers content it is not possible to have the physics engine to be as smooth or responsive.
There are three Holy Grails ...
1) point to point teleporting ... done
2) the physics to have dune buggy or hover bike races with the smooth 'real life' movements.
3) playing card games like spades. There has on of the best interfaces for playing cards i have ever seen.
SL beats There in so many ways that it is useless to count but those three things were killer in there.

I have a ring target, scorekeeping system that I use for skydiving that would not even need to be adapted fou your purpose, it would work right out of the box.

Perhaps this example might help in painting a clearer picture. In real life picture going into an arcade and playing the best racing car game they have with the full virtual movement. Then get in a real car. The physics in There for buggines and hover craft (for the entire world) is that much better than SL. Unfortunately, driving/flying/hovering and the Spades card game interface, for my preferences, are the only things There excels in. That is why I play SL. I have gotten about 4 or 5 people from There to try SL and I continually see them on line more and more.

I would also enjoy a nice simple flying game - a simple race through loops like LilyBeth described. No complex rules, able to be played by folks who aren't gamers and don't have the best reflexes in the world.
