Since gambling is classified as paying a wager, playing a game with a random outcome, then having a prize involved, I was wondering if a "subscription" would be classified as a wager. I was thinking a business could possibly provide a subscription based service for those willing to play poker and provide "free" tournaments for their subscribers, with the payouts for each tourny coming from portions of the subscription revenue. (about 50 to 80% of the subscription revenues going towards the prizes for scheduled tournaments) The subscription would also possibly include free access to the business for people willing to play with play money in their venue.

The subscription would probably still count as a wager in this case, because you are still paying it out with the expectation of receiving it back as the result of a random event. Sorry.

It's astounding, given the questionnable morals of half of what i've seen since I joined two days ago that I can't sit down in game and have a cheeky game of poker - what a farce!

You could have subscription based poker where people put in money to help pay the running costs for the table, but you couldn't give prizes to the winners.
I guess you could give prizes if you kept a book proving that all the subscriptions paid for the running costs and you donated the prize money out of your own pocket, but you might find that it was hard to prove.

It's actually rather recent. SL "claims" that the feds banned online gambling and thus SL being online(sometimes) is no exception. There used to be very high quality and complicated gambling systems like VGA and hundreds of sims dedicated solely to gambling.

So as I'm reading this thread is dawns on me. There are a lot of "Beauty Pagenant" where you pay an entrance fee. In the hopes of being selected the winner so that you can collect an even bigger pay out. So how is this different than gambling?
I can name one pagenant I'm in right now that the entrance fee was 500L in hopes of winning 25,000L!

JulieAnne It's very different because other people are supposed to select the winner vs. a script that uses llFrand to determine whether you won money or not.

the definiation is this..
A random set of events that determine a winner.
Beauty contest arnt Random sets of events a person is choosen by a score.
If you could figure out a way to base poker on scoring but not have the deck dealt to them since the 52 cards would be randomly put in.
IE.. make the game a skill game 100% instead of a random number generator then you could
but alas you cant.. hence why online gaming /poker has died in SL and Online.
(but rest assured there are BILLIONS of dollars being spent to reactivate this wonderful right to play online. so cross your fingers)

Hello All,
I have dabbled a bit in online poker, haven't been particularly successful, but that doesn't matter as it was with play money anyway!.
I wouldn't mind playing it in SL, it is quite strange to have a "world" where there is absolutely no gambling. But I guess that they don't want to get shutdown, so they have to do what the Men In..... Feds say!
