This is driving me insane now - i keep flying off without wanting to - my av just keeps going - and then after a while i am back where i was originally. ANy way of avoiding this - or even better Linden Labs..... FIXING IT??

That's one of the 150 flavors of "lag"
Your machine and the sim server you are in or flying into stop communicating nd you just keep going and going.. when they finally start speaking to each other again you pop back to where you really are supposed to be.
Way to fix it? Probably not. MAY be something with your ISP or if you are using a wireless router but most likely it's just the lain olt net between you and LL... It happens to everyone now and then...

Take a look at your packet loss numbers. If they are non-zero, try lowering your max bandwidth.
