This has started happening again for me. I don't know what triggered it either.

From: James Linden
1.9.0 (18) will fix "downloading clothing" and invisible avatars on login

I have found and fixed the problem that causes invisible avatars on login. The fix will ship with Second Life 1.9.0 (18), expected some time next week.

Basically, an attempt to optimize the world map backfired. We were trying to preload some of its information on startup. Sometimes, especially on Mac (which has small network buffers), especially on lossy network connections (ie, not in our office), this would cause the avatar's shape information to be lost or massively delayed.

I'm sorry to say there's no good workaround until 1.9.0 (18). Please don't try to change your avatar's appearance until your avatar is visible - this may cause clothing items to be damaged.

No... seen it happen a lot, and have newbies on HI complain about it too.

Your not the only one.. the asset server seems to be always under tremendous load for quiet a long time. To me, that would be a serious indication that it needs either a major overhaul, or a substantial hardware upgrade.. or both.

I frequently find myself sitting waiting for textures to load when I res into a new place.. and NO, it's not my connection or hardware. It's not just limited to NEW places either. I can log back into a place I just shutdown SL from and have to wait for static textures (ones that haven't changed for weeks) to load from the asset server.

If LL wants to lighten the load on the asset server they need to do something.. heck, fix the darn cache first! There's no reason a 1GB cache can't hold all the static textures from a 2048M parcel of land. Yeesh!

Newbie here, and I was just wondering if my cache was doing anything useful at all. Logout and log back in almost immediately and clothes take an inordinately long time to appear. Not to mention my immediate surroundings, even when I've been standing in the same largely static location for an hour. Quite annoying.

And while a bit off topic, when I've zoned in and am waiting for a building to appear around me it does annoy me to see a shop's billboards materializing dozens of meters away inside another as yet non-existent building. Does the engine really not understand that objects which are in immediate proximity to my avatar and not occluded by multiple other surfaces should receive priority?
