I love it how the lindens just throw stuff on us without even asking if we want it.

"Voice is optional" --- so says the linden blog. It should be added however "The new HUD, is not."
So -- why do the lindens spend money and man hours working on Seemingly cool features that nobody really asked for, and those who opt out get stuck in a hell? /rant. I never asked for voice -- if i wanted to /talk/ to someone, I'd fire up Ventrilo or Teamspeak as i have many, many times before. The idea of actually talking to someone and hearing them, for me, is a bit of a turn off. I don't like it -- it makes me feel awkward, and don't ask me why.
I know what you're saying! "You can turn voice off though, you stupid whiny ***!" Why -- yes! Yes i can! And i have! I don't care if I'm missing out on half the stuff that goes on in the grid, i won't turn it on for anything. However: I can't turn this blasted HUD the way it was before. I don't want a bulky, unattractive, takes-up-half-my-screen, hard to use Multi-tool that goes with me all the time. I was happier with 4 separate windows so i could manage them all at once and have them look the way i want them to. Let me give you an example: In my car, i have a radio (which is car stock), an MP3 player, a grocery list, and a cell phone. It's interesting, though, that my Home-computer can do ALL these things, it stores music, lists, i can contact people on it, etc. So -- why don't i carry it in my car? Because it weighs 30 pounds, is too big to carry around, and doesn't look all the good when carried around town. It's just simpler to carry around many lighter tools, than it is to carry around one gigantic multi-tool.
The lindens have a long tradition of adding on features that nobody asked for in the first place, and making them mandatory (Remember the new map? Remember the new friends list? Remember the "Info used/on file/not on file?" Does anyone USE that last one?). Frankly, it's starting to get bad, so bad that i think they've surpassed AOL with their silly Add-ons.
It's simple really, give us two HUD options in the general/display tab of "Preferences": "New HUD" and "Old HUD with seperate Voice Pane" /rant
Anywho, I feel better now.

Actually they did ask, and they've known about it for as long as the voice First Look has been around, they just don't care.

Yes it is. Just uninstall the new one and reinstall the old one. And if you haven't kept the download of the old installer, why not?

HUD? Can't you just detach it? I don't have room for any new HUD anyway.

Anywho, I feel better now. So what's wrong with the map & friends lists?

From: Wolfgang Fackler Because i never downloaded it. SL downloaded it FOR me. Well if you haven't deleted it, it should still be on your pc, so you can reinstall it. Of course at some point, probably soon, it will become mandatory, but until then....

New layout makes SL too hard to use
08-03-2007 23:12
I just updated and had the new IM/friends/groups/chat multi-window forced on me. omg. I have been reading the comment posts, and I can't believe they have forced this. I would have liked to have known it was coming, so I could have expressed my dislike for the new layout. I would have reviewed it in FirstLook.... IF they had kept the FirstLook support in Linux, but.. *sighs*
What a horrible set of interface changes. I used it for 10 min and I don't have any desire to use it again any time soon. I sure hope they change it, because it's so hard to use now, maybe I'll just go back to chatting on MSN instead of trying to start a SL home/business. I'm sure glad that I waited a bit, and have not bought my land yet. I can't believe how hard it is to use now. ...it was quite good before.
...and don't think I don't like change. Change can be really good, and I like change... but not this one.
Yucky yucky yucky!
