100% Core Usage?

Anyone know why SL insists on useing 100% of one of my cpu cores while its maximized (the 'top window') I can minimize it.. and it'll run at the 'usual' 20-40% spread over all 4 cores.. but if i actualy have it up and at the 'front' of the windows screen.. 1 of those 4 cores will jump to 100%.. and stay there.... Is this just something SL's programed to do? or is there something i can change in the options to make it stop doing this and act a bit more normal?

So far as I am aware, the SL client has always requested the max available. You can by-pass this though by opening task manager, right clicking the SL client there (usually top of the list) and select "set affinity"...there you can choose which chip, or chips the client has access to. I use a laptop and set mine to use just one chip to prevent over-heating.

No. This is no longer true about SL 'requesting the max'.

Ok, i was having this problem on my Duo Core 3ghz. Then i got a quad core @ 2.83ghz and it was still running at 50% over all 4 cores.

The fix is to turn off the AERO style features of windows and SL's overall use drops to 18-25% over all cores.

CPU power has increased tremendously so that on the more powerful machines, SL does not max out 2 cores and definitely not 4 cores.

I just tested it now.

I went to My Computer (got properties on it), chose advanced settings, performance, and turned on everything and my CPU usage jumped to 52%.

I turn off all those fancy settings and set it for "performance", and my CPU usage drops 25% give or take 8% in either direction as i do stuff in SL.

And i run SL with everything Max, even draw at 512m (including on mainland), 16x antialiasing and 16xQ anisotropic.

hmm might try those.. but like i said.. its not ALL the cores at 100%... just 1 of the 4... its just irritating lol.

Well 1 core should max out.

Thats why with 4 cores i run at 25%. SL is not a weak application. Its very demanding and CPU intensive. It will dominate 1 core without a doubt.

I misunderstood you perhaps and thought you said it was 100% across all 4.

It does distribute on mine.

No idea.

heh yea.. its only maxing 1.. the others are generaly all between 35-55% use.. but 1 is constnatly sitting at 100% when SL is up 'top' of everything else (say i have SL running and i open up IE... the core use goes down to 'normal'.. all 4 cores shareing the load.. but the instant in bring SL ontop of IE.. 1 core will max out)

Do you have multi-threading turned on in the advanced tab? CPU use will also vary depending on how much of the load it shares with the GPU.

A while ago, SL had serious problems with multi-core systems and it was 'common knowledge' to play games with the processor affinity, forcing SL to run on only one core.

If you're doing that, or anybody else is, that's really not needed any more. It will likely hurt more than it will help.

Yea what Sindy said.

Restricting SL to one core seems to me like you would be stressing your CPU and driving up the temperature of that core since it cannot distribute the load to the other cores and reduce the workload.
