First off I'm sorry for starting a new thread on this touchy subject, but I wanted it to be a thread starter rather than get lost in the hundred of posts on the matter.

I'm not going to rehash the whole problem, other than the Lindens have but a link up in the blog, to justify the new ID verification sceme, for those that can be bothered to click the link it clearly states that VISA card issue does not verify age, and that merchants using it should find other ways of doing so.

Well I decided to check other credit card companies and their rules of issue an example I'll give you is MASTER card.

They do not issue cards to under 18's,( at least in the UK0 even the card that was created for students cannot be issued to a person less than 18 years old, and some cannot be issued to 21 and even 25 (gold and platinum)

So it quite clear to me, the Lindens do not set up an Age verification sceme, with a company that has in the passed sold on personal infomation

They do not put our personal details at risk of I.D. theft.

What they do is find out which companies allow minors to use their products, such as VISA, and disallow those payment methods.

This should keep more people happy than there are now this should impact sales to virtual merchants far less, and it should keep the Lindens happy and cover them for any legal grounds.

Thank you for reading

Ceejay

This would still annoy people without non-Visa cards (like myself). And then you get the issue of "Why do they only have to use a credit card to verify while I have to give out my SSN or drivers license, etc."

I have asked, via these forums, twice, if LL will accept a notarized letter stating that I am indeed over 18. For those of us in the USA, at least, this should be a viable option as an alternative to the Identity verification LL is proposing. I will gladly pay up to 10USD for this service.

From what I heard the prepaid Visa was being closely followed by prepaid Mastercard, so hence it would be equally useless for verification.

Many adult sites get by with "By clicking this button you confirm that you are 18 or older". Now just WHY does SL "need" anything stronger?

Tell me where you can find a Notary that charges only $10? Easier way, send a Cerified letter, signature required,, with return receipt. . I still don't have an idea for out of US customers, sorry.
