I don't find that I use the gesture popup window much to speak of.

I would love to put the music and video controls in that space, especially if they are going to become opaque, as they appear to be.

How often do you use the gesture popup window?

By gesture poup window I mean the one at the right on the chat bar.

Rarely if ever, I'd normally use Edit >> Gestures instead. More often I click it by accident, then click off it and it decides to perform a gesture anyway.

I'd be all for kicking it off there.

I haven't used it since the week I joined SL. I suppose newbies are those who benefit most because they feel compelled to play with it and inadvertently discover the gesture system.

Just to make sure I understand you, you use the Gesture Editor, the thing that allows you to define and edit gestures, simply to trigger gestures?

Er... triggering gestures? What else would you use it for?

I like the new music and video controls. The fact that they're not opaque doesn't bother me, because they're *smaller*. I wish I could stand using the new focus beta so I could get them out of the way.

Only if I don't know what a gesture is triggered by, sorry should have said that. I prefer the layout with scroll bar rather than a great big drop-down menu.

One way to use gestures is the obvious making your avatar move and play sounds.

Some folks use them to send chat on hidden channels to trigger listen events in scripts.

To me those are two fairly distinct and diferent uses for gestures.

If I'm in a crowded place trying to read and make the occaisional comment without too many typos I don't have time to squint at the gesture popup list. extract the slash at the front of some of them . About the only thing I use the list for is to clap, usually a bit late, at music performances.

Some folks do their gesturing by pressing the Function keys.

You might have some particular activity that you find the gesture popup list useful for, like maybe, hosting a game show or something.

How many of gestures do you have? Do you make them yourelf, or name them yourself, or do you have basically the ones that came in the library , like I do, plus some dance animations with names like dance3 and dance4 that you can't keep straight (which I can't) ;

The ones in the focus beta are opaque.

In the Gesture Editor you can sort by chatstring trigger, function key Key, and Name, you can adjust the size and position of the dialog box, and you get the to see the chat triggers and function keys, so it's got a lot more power than the popup list.

Hmm, let's see, the underlying point of this thread was not actually about the gesture popup, instead my purpose was to try to figure out somewhere not in the world window to stick the audio and video controls.

Well, back to gestures, it'd be nice to be able to put the gestures in folders that you could use when you wanted to play a gesture. We can put gestures in folders in our inventory, but while we can play animations from our nventory, we can't trigger gesturesdirectly from our folders. I wonder why that is?

That's what I use them for, yes.

That's useful for function-key gestures. I don't use those much because too many of the gestures in my inventory have "helpful" function-key bindings that conflict with each other... so I can't trust my currently-active gesture set to have sane fkey bindings.

I normally only keep a couple of dozen gestures active at any time, so that list is pretty short and quinting isn't required.

Nope, I use it for all but the handful of common gestures I always have active that I memorise.

From: someone

A couple hundred. I've made some, picked some from boxes, bought a few (though I prefer buying sound files and animations). A lot I put in avatar folders so I've got the appropriate ones at hand. Most of them have the names changed by now.

I know. BUT they're also smaller.

It's also not something I can do with two clicks. Particularly because it's got all my inactive gestures in there as well.

My vote is to make them even smaller, and make them draggable. Just a single line in small font "Audio |---===| O >" with the name as the drag handle.

How about in the menu bar? With a little bit of design effort, they could be squeezed in to the left of the clock.

Could even just put a couple pop-up windows and leave a couple icons in the menu bar. Lots of possibilities, depending on how powerful and flexible their UI is.

I like the idea of using the main title bar, but that doesn't work for folks that run SL full screen.

I would gladly give up the Shout button stick the audio and video controls its place. I rarely shout and when I do I use the keyboard to make it be a shout.

I think that what they mean by "the main title bar" is still there when you're in full screen. If I'm not mistaken it's the one with the menus and your L$ total and the sim name. I would HATE to have SL start putting stuff in the OS window decorations (in some operating systems, like Linux, you may not even HAVE one and if you do it's not usable by the application.

Aye, but the menu bar is there full screen or windowed. :)

The default gestures are pretty useless (what, no wave?) and I haven't found how to edit them yet. So, no, I don't use them.

which will remain nameless, but is about 12yrs old now, instead of fairly useless gestures they had a pie menu, that when approaching another av, much like the one we have to pull up a profile, you could choose to either, shake hands (greet), hug, or kiss. The permission menu dropped down and asked if "so n so" my greet you, yes or no. It was really nice to have this and is really the only thing i miss about that oldie chat. Just betcha a buck it could be done here... :D
