Since I downloaded and installed the March 11 update, I cannot:

1. Access Groups
2. Access Contacts
3. Receive or send IMs

Where can I find the older version release??

Today's update is an update of the release candidate, not the mainstream regular viewer, correct?

Do people actually delete downloaded installation files the instant they get through installing them? I personally can't imagine what it would be like to be that orderly and neat.

I don't. My downloads folder is a mess, but I have a pretty good idea where to find installers when I need them.

1.22 is now the official viewer, there was also an update to the RC to bring it up to the same state as the official release, which includes an extra crash fix I think. Not sure why they updated the RC at the same time as making it the official viewer.

I believe the general practice these days is that all new versions of Release Candidate (the test viewers) are forced updates - LL sensibly enough doesn't want to process bug reports on old versions of test viewers.

There's a change coming up for supporting old viewers for the release (normal regular) viewers, they don't want to have to support some of the older viewers any more, because they are based on some code with a bug in it, and the time spent supporting the old bugged code is time not spent working on the current version.

To the extend that older and third party viewers can still work with the servers, you can run them by using the "channel" argument in the shortcut that you use to start SL.

It's --channel "Some string enclosed in quotes" that's added, if memory serves.
