I just got a new laptop and I installed Second Life on it, but when I try to connect it says someting like "Second Life cannot be accessed from this computer. If you feel that this is in error, contact support@secondlife.com".
So I email support@secondlife.com and nothing happens. So I email again and again nothing happens, this time for a few days. So I log into the Second Life website and find out that support@secondlife.com does not get checked anymore. So if it does not get checked, why is it telling me to email it?? Instead it tells me to fill out a trouble ticket, so I try to do that, but it won't let me because I am not a big paid account (who can afford that anymore??) so I have to fill it out with boilerplate things that do not apply to my situation.
So I filled out one and put in the note section what my problem is and no response. So I fill out another one and still no response.
Does anyone still work at Second Life? Why don't they want me to log on??

I saw a post almost identical to this yesterday...
I think all the person had to do was reboot their modem.

From: Zolen Giano I saw a post almost identical to this yesterday...
I think all the person had to do was reboot their modem. That's what they told me, but then I learned something else....the laptop I got is used and the person before me I guess came on and screwed around, and now the laptop itself is banned by something called a MAC ADDRESS which whatever that is its whats not letting me on. So I recycled my modem for 24 hours before I wrote the first post here just like it was suggested and my IP even changed but nothing happened. And that's ok I mean if they really don't want my laptop to connect and theres nothing wrong with it, then there must be something wrong with them and perhaps this is for the best.

What luck. What are the odds that one would buy a laptop totally at random and get one hardware banned from SL? You must have broken the mirror you were carrying under a ladder because you were startled by a black cat. How'd you find out?
If you want to pursue the matter you should probably call support.

If you want to pursue the matter you should probably call support. The person who was messing around is related to me, so I bought her laptop from her when she got a new one (for really cheap). So maybe its not so much bad luck as much as my sister is a jerk. But who is the bigger jerk, my sister who messes around in Second Life, or the Second Life masters who will not let me (innocent!) play? And you can not call support unless you have an expensive account I found that out today. I am not really badly disappointed you know because it's not the end of the world. But it seems like Second Life management should be a little more on top of these kinds of things like for example telling me to email an address that is never checked?? This is just very disorganized.

Where'd you find out that you can't call support? Did you call the number?
You might want to see if your sister would give you your money back. I don't think I'd be buying anything else from her.
The obsolete error message is annoying but not directed at you.

The obsolete error message is annoying but not directed at you. It is a very good laptop and if this is the only thing that it can not do, I think I am still successful with buying it. Additionally I have been in a conversation with a network administrator that I knew from a long time ago and he tells me that going under this kind of Second Life "ban" is straight forward. He says that Linden Labs has banned not only the IP address of my router (which does not make sense as she only used her laptop computer to get to Second Life from here a few times) but also the MAC ADDRESS of her old laptop computer. So the solution he says can come from two things. The first is "Shooped Life" which I guess is a type of Second Life client that is hacked up to report a wrong MAC ADDRESS and also a fake IP address. I downloaded that after a long time of searching and it does not work on a mac. The other thing that can be done is to just use a fake MAC ADDRESS which on this is easy to do like this: sudo ifconfig en0 lladdr NEWMACADDRESS So I did that on the ethernet and the wifi connections and then shut off the ethernet port like he suggested and connected by wifi to another network and then it all worked just fine. But I don't want to have to do that every time I want to play Second Life. Do you think there could be some interest in developing this into an application for download? I can not be the only individual having these problem!

Andrew, did you by any chance happen to buy your computer from Chip's sister? If so, that might be the problem.
What was the text you suppied for the support ticket? The description of the problem, that is.
The response you quoted does contain a phone number. Did you try calling it?
Of course one could go premium for a month.
Are you folks using your laptops wireleslly? If so, you might try connecting with a cable.

Laptop is brand new by about 6 months and as for the details i gave a breif description this happens when attempting to log into SL via my laptop, all firewalls are disabled, theres no such issue logging in on my main desktop computer as for the wireless issue i use both methods depending on where in the house i am and this dosent affect it in any way, and before this pops up i have already tried clearing the cache and reinstalling the client and the laptop is more powerfull than my desktop in everyway so im betting its not a hardware issue altho i wouldnt know for sure i also recently got another response on support "Hello Andrew, Thanks for contacting us. Regarding your issue, we have been checking your accout, when you choose the option ''I can't login with inworld with my account'' could mean many different issues, if you can't login because you are having a technical issue, unfortunatelly this support is currently only offered to Premium account holders. To investigate further your account, we would like to request your IP address please. To get this information check the link below http://whatismyipaddress.com/ . *****, Linden Lab Support." as for the phone number i live in norway right now and a good amount of ppl never use landlines as thier normal phones and opt for mobiles instead so calling the US with my mobile here only if i really REALLY need to

Andrew, it appears to me that Linden Lab is, indeed, trying to help you with your problem by checking to see if there is something they can do at your level of membership. If the problem is something of a technical issue then LL has done all it can do for your type of account. If, for some reason your laptop has been accidently banned I'm sure they will correct it. If not, you will probably have to upgrade your account to premium to get further help from them. That's about all they can do.

I dont doubt it
09-20-2008 12:28
I dont doubt they are tring to help peggy altho it seems reather silly from one point of view to upgrade to a premium account just to get some more technical help, on the other hand i see why they would offer such services only to such accounts.
On the other hand this isnt a huge problem for me just a minor inconvenience, but i would like to see my problem resolved in some way or another

If not, you will probably have to upgrade your account to premium to get further help from them. That's about all they can do. Hahahahahahahahah no. Linden Labs isn't trying to do anything except make as fast a buck as possible. Historically they have had exactly ZERO interest in supporting unpaid accounts in ANY way. How do I know this? Because I used to be one of the most "feared griefers" (lulz) on that lame production grid. And I got away with it for years. Ask me how. Ok, I'll tell you. I bought an island. Thats right, the very second I pumped a wad of cash into Linden Labs, they left me alone. I hardly ever heard a complaint about my activites except the very occasional "hey, could you settle down please?". Oh wait, I remember once when I sprayed a few thousand prims into some jackass's christian paradise I got banned for a day. So Chip Turbo, I'm glad to see you not taking Linden Labs' incompetence too seriously. Unfortunately its historical, leading all the way back to day one when some arse decided to lift the Active Worlds code and break it even more. And it will never stop, no matter how many CTOs get fired. Ask me why. Ok, I'll tell you. It's because the problem isn't with the executive layer. The problem is with their payscale for programmers and engineers. If you want rockstars, the starting salary for a programmer with say, ten years experience at EA doing engine design is about 180K. If you don't believe me, ask Robin Linden. She worked in the game field as some kind of PR thing for quite some time--and still does. And while you're asking her how much rockstar programmers make, make sure you ask her the difference between her salary and the salary of the poor schlep who single handedly ported this monster to OS X. Make sure you have an empty bucket handy before though. Seriously. So, Linden Labs is incompetent, Second Life is completely broken, STILL, and no one seems to be able to prick up and take responsibility. I can help them with that. Ask me how. Ok, I'll tell you. Who's ultimately responsible for the success or failure of a company on every level? That's right kids, its the CEO. That used to be Rosdale until he bailed to look for someone "with more operational and management expertise". Now they have Mark Kingdon, who comes to Linden Labs with much the same experience as Robin Linden, almost entirely in marketing and public relations... Because that's going to fix shoddy code and screwed design. Really, it's been and will continue to be just more turd polishing. Bravissimo, Linden Labs. You guys sure are on the ball.

Oh I know, Rawhead...........but what you "know" is something I don't know. You are 'stating" facts...........right? Back them up, please. You see, no one is privy to those secrets you are telling us. We can jump on your band wagon if we had backed up facts to justify it. Since you stated quite proudly your past "griefer" interests, your statements are really quite suspect. But, carry on.

Since you stated quite proudly your past "griefer" interests, your statements are really quite suspect. But, carry on. Sweetheart, listen. I've been on these boards for a long time under a number of different monikers. I roamed second life for quite a while. I gave it up a few months ago because I realized that no physical contact whatsoever is kinda unhealthy. I do not work at Linden Labs. I do not know anyone who currently works there (I don't think, but who knows, I go to a lot of conferences). I did know a handful of techies at the beginning, but they were all very good boys and girls and never told me anything about what was going on internally. So how do I know what's going on? Because I've been in the corporate technology field for twenty years, and I know *exactly* how companies like this roll. Also, they released the source code for the client and server some time ago, without really very carefully examining the comments at first. Whoopsie! On top of that, without exception and including myself, everyone who's had the great misfortune of dealing with their source code can tell you exactly how broken it is and in exactly what ways. But I'm not here to tell you that. I went off ages ago about all of that on these boards under another name. It's all been said to death. How do I know about whats going on in the executive layer? I read the trade rags, because that's part of my job. Linden Labs is mostly transparent about what transpires behind their closed doors, so the news about one CEO leaving and another coming in was reported in great gory detail by just about everyone. And Robin Linden? I've talked to her in world extensively (and publicly). That along with Linden Labs own site, where she's listed her background and qualifications, is where I got all of that. I know how the grid was designed because I've designed identical grids (both virtual and physical), mostly in my case for handling the computational headache of backing up a few hundred billion (I'm not lying) individual files across several US states and a small part of Canada. So, my information is gleaned from three places: 1. public sources 2. professional experience 3. actually talking to lindens publicly in world (when they were a bit less paranoid about being canned) And by the way, it's ridiculously easy to stop griefers cold. I told LL how to do it a hundred times. I enforced the method in my sim in the form of four single prim, scripted objects, but it could easily be built into the server code. My griefing was mostly a fun demonstration of how broken things were, and exactly how to fix them--but I didn't start doing that until LL had ignored my pleas (and solution) to fix it for two years. Anyone who was hurt along the way really needs to get some sun. So there it is. Good enough, yes?

I have the same problem with my Sherry Cazenove account. I have a few, and I can get on them all EXCEPT this one. Changed the password and everything. It's not a Laptop problem....I'm on a PC...and I've seen other threads saying the same thing. I came here looking to see what exactly the error is about....if it's a glitch or if it's on hold or banned or what.

I have not done anything wrong on SL and neither has my friend, who is the only other one who has used my comp. Besides, both of our accounts work on other comps. I sent in a ticket, uninstalled and reinstalled SL, rebooted the modem and the comp. Nothing.

I haven't been able to log in for almost seven months, because evidently my laptop has been denied access. Its not the ip address either; I poked around and found in the source a little tidbit about matching a number generated by a combination of hardware IDs in your specific computer, so that they can actually ban a unique physical device. But since evidently linden labs doesn't make mistakes, I am evidently a 14 year old child with a propensity for virtually streaking through virtual churches or something.
