The connection process keeps being aborted, me being dropped back to the login screen with zero indication of what went wrong, and then SL itself is acting very crashy, seems to be related to packet loss or something, whenever i turn up the draw distance or teleport into a heavily loaded area SL just freezes on me!

Didja try turning off shadows? That's been working for a number of people, myself included. (<--in terms of crashing. The login is a whole other kettle of fish.)
