Downloaded the latest version, and I've been running for hours... knock wood, without any major issues. This version seems STABLE for a change! Well Done, Lindens!

I would always suggest fully uninstalling any previous versions of SL's client before installing a new client. Installing over an old version can cause issues not just with some elements of the client, but more importantly, the registry. Run a registry cleaner at least once a week, depending on your usage. Assuming you are using XP+

If you are running XP, Start, Settings, Control Panel, firewall icon, exceptions tab, check to see if Secondlifes client is listed and checked.

"sorry Second Life has to close" when starting 1.17.3
07-06-2007 09:24
1.17.3 Installs ok for me, but crashes *as soon* as I start it. I get a message saying
"Second Life has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I've never seen this 'crash on startup' before with any previous version.
This has the following extra info:
Error signature.
AppName: secondlife.exe AppVer: 1.17.3.0 ModName: secondlife.exe ModVer: 1.17.3.0 Offset: 007a6970
This is on a Windows XP pro system with Nvidia GeForce 5500 graphics.
I've gone back to 1.17.1 (I don't have a copy of 1.17.2) and this works fine -- well it only crashes every 15 minutes or so as I normally expect in recent months with SL.
(I've tried uninstalling the old version and reinstalling from a new download - but get exactly the same problem.)
Is anyone else having this problem - and does anyone know of a solution??

This is first time for me a new update would consistantly crash. It crashed sitting at the Connect screen before loging in, it crashed after a minute logged in, and once, even the crash reporter crashed (it never completed)!
I then uninstalled 1.17.3 and reinstalled 1.17.2, and it too began these crashes where before I had no problems!
So, I completely removed 1.17.2 (uninstall + delete SecondLife directories), REBOOTED, reinstalled 1.17.2 and then installed 1.17.3 again and now there is no crashing.

even funnier
friend tp`d home and the land was empty i tp`d there and his house and all was still there
he used .3 and i`m on .2 and he didn`t change any settings prolly explains why he couldn`t do anything in the estate tools either heh
got him to revert back to .1.2 as .2 screws him up lol?
LL thumbs up on how to screwup everything with each update, just make sure we all can`t connect to the server and nothing works so we can start from scratch instead of having a workable client and more and more gets fubar`d, ty
allready gonna name my next island after the client, u might guess it with 2 seconds of thinking bout it heh
oh, reminds me of an actual "joke" some one i know had happen to them, short version: "hey ll i have a problem!" "yea yea... just clear cache and if that doesn`t help restart the sim." "hey ll i`ve done that but still there!" "yea yea file a bug report on the jira *sheesh*" "hey ll how the f` does the jira work!" "ffs RTFM" "hey ll, what f`ing manuall?!" "*click* issue solved" "was this mandatory update? who has the previous version?"

I had a couple of odd problems too:
First I couldn't do the autoupdate. Found out that Windows Firewall and ZoneAlarm were running at once, and ZoneAlarm has been notorious at my house for blocking programs that were supposed to be passed. Turned it off. End of problem.
Client installed and started up fine. Got in faster than previous releases in fact. Then I noticed that my feet were sunk into my floor at all times. No one else's. Just mine. On every floor. lasted through two relogs.
The client was very laggy for much of the night as well.
After a few hours, I had something to do and left SL logged in for about 15 minutes unattended. When I came back, I was able to move the camera but could not get off the couch and could not hear anything. No streaming, no birds chirping; nothing. Exited SL and upon doing so lost my entire internet connection. I had to reconfigure my router to get it back, involving restoring all default settings and restarting it twice.
How should I feel about that? Hehe... Otherwise it's super duper! ; -D

Still running more or less stable, using 1_17_0_12. (Never even saw 17_1, 17_2 crashed every few minutes, learned my lesson and left 17_3 alone). One day I will have to do a non-optional download then I will be scr*wed like everyone else here.
BTW installing SL over the previous version on a Mac doesn't seem to cause problems, but I suppose OS X is a whole different ballgame than Windows.
Anyone on a Mac who is having big problems, and can do it, should try reinstalling 1_17_0_12.

Allex When it crashes you could try going into view what information the crash report contains and then click on view technical information and see what it lists as module 1 and module 2. It could be that it's your graphics card causing SL to crash, in which case one of your graphics drivers might show up under module 2. You also might want to consider upgrading your graphics card. It's almost 5 years old now and even nVidia is no longer supporting it with new drivers. Autoupdate and 1.17.3 have been working fine for me. No crashes so far.

I've had a look at this to see what's listed at modules 1 and 2. Module 1: SecondLife.exe Module 2: ntdll.dll I'm pretty sure that ntdll.dll is part of MS Windows. Anyone know how you can tell which module is crashing in a crash report? I've tried version 1.18.0.4 on the beta grid - and this crashes in just the same way. So there's no point me waiting for the release on Wednesday ... I bought the Nvidia GeForce FX5500 last August - and only got this one because it was AGP (my PC motherboard doesn't have an PCI express slot). I guess I better pay up all my rent a few weeks in advance, because I guess I'm not going to be able to get onto SL for a while after the Wednesday update. Its off to the PC store next I guess ... Using version 1.17.2 (somehow deleted 1.17.0) with not too many problems. Using 1.17.1 was a big mistake. Version 1.17.3 does not work as well for me as 1.17.2 (many random crashes - sometimes taking the OS with it).
I tried running the First Look viewer as well - didn't have a lot of crashes - but could not get voice to work consistently and had other issues. This morning I couldn't upload and had issues with some objects not rezzing. Logged in using 1.17.2 viewer without any problems. Did try First Look again with same issues.
Running Mac OS X on a MacBook Pro Dual Core with 2GB memory and ATI X1600 graphics card.

Anyone on a Mac who is having big problems, and can do it, should try reinstalling 1_17_0_12. I am not familiar with the Mac OS, Windows yes... in my experience since Micorsoft did away largely with the various ini files, and utilised the registry as a central database of settings, it can be easily corrputed. This is especially true when 'updating' over existing software, the registry seems to err on the side of safety and not always delete unused keys. The result is an ever slowing down of the startup process and more errors. Personally I swear by using a registry cleaner. Some of the programmes are better than others, but in most cases, the net result is a faster starting system and less errors. All Microsoft need to do now is produce either their own stand alone system, or make it automated. I'm not sure if they have addressed this in Vista, because I refuse to have that anal controlling bit of cr*p on my system again.

1.17.3 - crash on startup (due to SSE Instructions?)
07-09-2007 04:24
Following this up in The JIRA bug reporting system - it appears that there are problems with version 1.17.3 for people with older processors that don't support 'SSE/SSE2' instructions. See: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1610Allex

1.17.3 crashing -- and 1.18.0.4
07-09-2007 04:55
From: Usagi Musashi If thats the case then first look must be a total lose for them......... 1.18.0.4 crashes in exactly the same way for me on the beta grid. Unless LL fixes this, it looks like some of us won't be able to get on SL after Wednesday when the viewer upgrade come out. Good job I didn't rush and and buy a new graphics card - it looks like my old graphics card is ok, I just need a new PC to put it - lol. Allex

Allex Thats a problem!. It does happen from time to time client releases just kill off some users. The first look is a total mess, which is surprizing because I thought they finally got they tails together and stopped release premature clients. But thats not the case sadly. I do understand we are going into new lands when doing clients building. But really the next major release is going to be a nightmare for many. If you dont update your spec ever 8 months or so you well be left out in the cold as they say. I had to STOP using first look altogther and i hope the crash log will be useful, because i tell you. 1.19 is right around the corner as they say in the next 7 or 9 week in beta. So we better have the monkey coders do their best for the grid. Thanks for reading Usagi

Allex I have the same problem with my ancient PC Specs: AMD Athlon 'Thunderbird' 1,200MHz Windows XP Home SP2 640MB RAM nVidia GeForce 6200 and so on..... Anything up to 1-17-1-2 has been fine. Apart from the fact that EVERY single viewer crashed when trying to run with nVidia drivers later than 78.01 Looks like i'll be coming down the computer shop with ya If the 1-18.x.x viewer versions are anything like 1-17-3(0) (and 3-(1)) then we have a problem. I already spend a lot on membership fees and I would need a good reason to go out and buy a new PC just to be able to log in. Is the solution to buy a new PC really......anyone?

Well, i am running a AMD Athlon64 4000+ PC with nvidia chip a little overclocked^^ and a Nvidia Graphic Card 6200. I had only problems -dont know the version now- as the Half of Residents had problems with crashing SL. If i am install SL or FirstLook or BetaGrid, i am doing it almost overwriting the old version. And i think mostly all things are done proberly. I ve had problems with crashing too as they took out FirstLookWindlight and then changed to FirstLookVoice. But now firstlook is running well. I am running SL not on the C-Drive. I set it to another Partition, but that shouldnt be a difference. Hope the grid will up soon.....i am SLholician too lol Hope you all have fun without much crashes after updates. Hope i ll have fun too then lmao.

Hi, 1.18.0(5) seems to start up (before the grid is back online LOL). I have to agree with the previous post about SSE/SSE2 instructions. This might also explain why I was never able to use SL with nVidia drivers later than 78.01 as I figured it was to do with shader support and SSE, hence why 'ripple water' has always been greyed out LOL. Because of the 8x.xx drivers bringing Shader Support to the gf6200's Fingers crossed for the new viewer (slaps the table)
