Not sure if I am posting this in the proper forum as I usually don't post at all, but there has been a problem for some time with inventory items being lost in SL. Not just left somewhere and forgotten, but being gone from inventory completely. I have experienced this numerous times myself, and I am hearing that others are having the same problems. I understand that there is a program called SLInventory to back up your inventory to your HD, but there are severe limitations to that. I feel, and I am sure I am not alone in this, that the SL viewer needs to have the ability to backup up not just user settings and keep them on your hard drive, but also a complete backup of ALL inventory items. Not just those you created that have full perms, but the ENTIRE inventory, in the off-chance that the servers crash and inventory is lost. I just had an item returned to me that was "FOUND", that I created 6 months ago, that had disapeared out of my inventory, which I had to re-create, to finish a build. That is just a little irritating. I think the upgrade to the Current version ought to include such a backup system to make sure items don't just evaporate into SL cyber space.

It's a lovely idea, but it probably won't happen. If the data is on your hard drive, it is theoretically accessible, no matter what sort of encryption scheme you employ. Putting a copy of all your stuff on your hard drive has HUGE implications for the protection of intellectual property rights.
I'd settle for a daily backup of the inventory servers and a weekly comparison of the live database with the backup.

I thought it was too good to come true. Its like wishing upon a star, there you might have better success. From: Lindal Kidd It's a lovely idea, but it probably won't happen. I've lost about $L5,000's worth of stuff by SL just eatting my inventory. Probably nothing compared to some other people. Try and make complete copies of stuff you have each time you buy or receive stuff, it's the only thing you can do that I can think of that'll help. But obviously it doesn't help with no copy stuff. Also, I don't believe Lindens will refund the equivalent $L lost, or replace your lost items. At least not within the same year of reporting the problem if you don't own a sim. =P

I have posted this on other links... My wife who joinned SL the same time I did, received an email from LL a couple of months ago.... Good News and Bad News...
Good News.. your account avatar name is still useable...
Bad News... after 4 1/2 years.. you entire inventory has been lost and we cannot recover it. Have a great day...
No recompense, no apology, no recourse. 90% of the inventory is irreplaceable as most of the items are no longer made, and or the designers have left SL. She signed in to a noobie account inventory. We estimated the replacement cost would be in several million L$'s.
The same day, I found SLInventory and bought the multiple account version, so I could backup all the items from our inventories, that are applicable to our companies in SL. I also backed up everything that I possibly could from all the accounts under our control. It's not perfect, but the alternative is devistating.
