I have noticed since the release of version 1.7 (52) yesterday, that I am hearing my computer receiving large bursts o what i can only assume is cache information from SL. This has caused my SL client to crash nearly every time I hear the HD start to get VERY busy. the heavy burst of HD activity is accompanied by music stutter, a couple of clicks and then SL crashes. The Crash Reporter comes up and I submit.
This activity was not noticeable in 1.6 on my system. Nor, did I frequently crash - in fact, a crash was a very rare occurence.
This may be a passing anomaly that will clear up as the DB and Asset servers catch up this week. Or, it could be a bug.... and could be only on the Mac OS.
I run a Dual 2.0 G5, the latest OS 10.4.2, with 2.5GB RAM, ATI 9800 Pro (256 VRAM), and a non-networked, no wireless router, 6Mbit/sec cable connection through the latest Motorola cable modem. I have the Network preference set on 650, with 0.1% packet loss the norm. Should I lower the Network setting temporarily while 1.7 catches up? I might be overloading the CPU's. But, have never had that problem before.
Again, this only started with 1.7. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

...elror, i have the same system as you, but i'm running only 512 megs RAM and an nvidia fx5200 (basically the stock machine)...
...i'm having identical crashes but i'm unsure whether or not they're related to the network death issue discussed on another thread...sometimes i get the stutter/freeze/disk crunching followed by the inevitable crash, but i don't believe it's 100% correlated with those times my network dies and i have to reset my DSL modem to regain a network connection...
...have you been getting kernel panics? - i don't remembre having any since the 1.7.0.53 update, but i experienced a *lot* of them under the previous incrementals...

No Kernel Panics.....

Myrrh,
Thank goodness, no kernel panics here. Gosh, have not had one of those since early Panther.
I have turned down the Network preference to 600. Don't seem to be experiencing the totally random snap/crackle and pop, crash. But, have now have crashed several times while bringing up Profiles, and managing Inventory.
Guess we shall see what 1.7.1 does for us.

...gosh, i hope turning down the network preference to 600 helps - i just changed mine from 1000, so we'll see...tonight the network connection crashes have been relentless; without exception i haven't been able to stay online for more than a scant handful of minutes at a time before SL brings everything down...
...i saw someone mention in another thread that it appears that the SL client is terminating the internet connection on their modem/router every time it crashes or they quit the client - now, upon closer examination, i think that may mirror my own experience and is certainly a superset of the massive cache/virtual memory bursts which bring about a hard client crash, but don't occur nearly as often as the dropped network connections which tend to shut down the client slightly more gracefully...

what helped to fix my problem was delete everything about the game and start over again... i no longer have any problems except it seems to be a bit more slow then before...
