As of 1.6, Quicktime support on prims allows users to not only display movies on prims, but text (and XML!) as well. For those of you that didn't know, this has been a long-sought-after feature.

To do this: Create a text (or XML) file. Note any carriage returns in raw text files will be converted to different "frames" of a movie. Upload your file, set it as media URL, and play it. It's that simple!

I can't wait to see what people do with this functionality. :D

Edit: Any file format that Quicktime does not understand will be automatically read in using this text functionality. This is a problem, as it can lag the client to death on large files. Please fix? :)

The Apple tutorial on text tracks. I have yet to try this in SL, but it works on the standalone Quicktime player.

Another slightly more complex way (but more powerfull in the end) would be to have:

www.site.com/image.php?arguments

Use GD or ImageMagick to return a PNG from it. :)

All well and good, but this means you have to expose a URL to other users. If there isn't a public one for them to use, you'd have to use one from your own site, which could be an issue for people concerned about privacy.

Maybe LL could provide such a URL for customers to use for their builds. That would negate any privacy concerns. If LL is concerned about phishing or other bogus uses of that URL, they could restrict access to the http: URL to only those IP addresses that have connected SL clients.

Did anyone get this to work? Is there a particular version of QT you need?

I tried using some stuff from the text tracks but it gave me a bunch of errors, even when I tried to load it up in QT itself.

I did a bit, but I got a very rudimentary font.

Apparently, with Text Tracks you can configure it a lot more precisely, with interesting effects.

Unfortunately I was not able to get it to work.

Yes. Several times in fact, using my own webspace. Remember to get the latest version of Quicktime.

I just tested this and also used some of the Text Descriptors from the Quicktime website and it worked great.
The only problem was that my SL client was extrememly slow while this 'video' was playing, with the {antialias: on}, but with it off it worked flawlessly.
