Yay, it won't even LOAD on my Mac Pro workstation. 4 processor cores and 8 gigs of ram ought to be able to handle something like Second Life, right?
Three attempts, the longest one ten minutes. Nothing.
Linden Labs, seriously, if you need some help purchasing test equipment, or even better, setting up some virtual OS X environments to make sure your software you know---actually works before you release it, just let me know. I do pro bono publico stuff all the time for companies who need help with their opened-source software.
Until you take me (or someone) up on my (or their) offer to help you, and you've gotten dozens of very serious offers over the years from people who could have turned your company around at any time for you, I (and we) will continue to humiliate you in public forums until our fingers turn blue.
Just admit that as an entity you have no hope for organization or relevance at this point at let someone help you out. I don't mean hiring some rock star CEO who has utterly no experience relevant to any of your problems but instead whos presence only for a short time quells the fears of your investors, either. Good job so far though, Kingdon. You've really managed to make utterly no difference at all.
Keep it up.

From: Rawhead Snoodle I (and we) will continue to humiliate you in public forums until our fingers turn blue. Faced with the problems they have, would you realistically hire a person--or ask that he or she help you-- when he or she's stated agenda is to humiliate you in public forums until you do things his or her way?

Haha, im not after help. I was after help four years ago. Now I'm just telling it like it is, trying to educate some poor sap before he or she spends their whole savings on Second Life in a depressed ironic recession fit. I don't necessarily WANT Linden Labs to fail. They're doing that despite my thoughts and wishes. But it is entirely their own fault by a series of horrible development and architecture decisions which have painted them into a corner that at this point the US economy will not let them dig themselves out of for some time. Even if they wanted to. Thus, they're doomed. If I were a Lincoln Labs employee, I'd be trying very hard to come up with some sort of lie to tell my next employer about what I'd been doing for the last few years.

Did you see that? I said "lincoln labs" instead of "linden labs". Huge difference. People who understand software work at lincoln labs. My bad!

From: Fellini Cooperstone What an entirely pointless response. No worse than yours. (or mine) Probably better, actually, since it is Linden Lab, not Linden Labs..

Wow, this thread really is a perfect microcosm of Second Life. Utterly pointless and without end.

From: Fellini Cooperstone What an entirely pointless response. Well, Suzanne's post had a point. To correct that person so that they know the name of the place they want to complain about. It is kind of like launching a campaign complaining about McDonald's cheeseburgers (gross), while calling the place McDaniels. Even your post has a point, albeit a wrong one.

One thing bad about this new viewer is that it many times does not quit the process. So you may find your SL slowing to a crawl and if you check your task manager you would find previous SecondLife.exe applications running from earlier. So far I have had 3 extra running. So now before launching SL, i have to check the task manager to make sure all instances of it are dead.

Thats because there is not one linden lab programmer (do they even have any left?) that understands what process "signal" is, even though it's taught to every first year comp sci major and has been for at least the last 30 years. The viewer hangs a "terminate" signal until all of its horribly written components report back that they've quit cleanly. If one or more don't, it doesn't quit at all. The way the rest of us (who know what we're doing) have gotten around this is to understand what the "kill" signal is and when to use it to decapitate unruly processes safely. You go though, linden lab. Keep churning out that quality product.

A few thoughts

Rawhead I know how frustrating software can be sometimes, so I completely understand your raving. A few constructive comments: 1. Make sure all instances of second life files are removed from your machine (cache, app, etc). 2. download the installer again, just in case you got a corrupt one. 3. cross your fingers. 4. If all else fails, install an earlier version of second life. good luck
