Movie streaming

just curious... how does one stream a movie in SL with the new version?

Don't worry Aces I don't understand it either but we'll figure it out. Life won't be the same on CD now will it ?

How to Use Quicktime:
- See the wiki and the forums for detailed information on using streaming
media.

- In Brief
o Apply a texture to an object from your inventory that will eventually
be replaced with the media stream.
o From “About Land/Media” use the GUI to select the texture above.
o Enter the URL of your media stream
o Use the media controls in the client to watch your stream.

Currently supported llParcelMediaCommandList options are:

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_STOP - stop the media stream and go back to the
first frame

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_PAUSE - pause the media stream (stop playing but
stay on current frame)

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_PLAY - start the current media stream playing and
stop when the end is reached

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_LOOP - start the current media stream playing, loop
to the beginning when the end is reached and continue to play

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_TEXTURE - specifies the texture to replace with video

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_URL - specifies the movie url

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_TIME - specifies the start-time used when playing a
movie

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_AGENT - specifies a single agent to apply the media
command to

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_AUTO_ALIGN - sets the 'Auto Scale Media' option in

- PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_UNLOAD - stop the movie and restore the texture that
has been replaced by the movie


Most of the QuickTime media formats are supported including

- QuickTime movies (.mov)

- Streamable stored QuickTime movies (.mov)

- Real time QuickTime streams (rtsp://)

- MPEG4 movies (.mp4, .mpeg4) (simple profile only)

- QuickTime VR scenes and objects (.mov)

- Flash movies (.swf) (only non-interative, version 5 and earlier)

- Note: not all of these may play - a good rule of thumb is if it plays in
the QuickTime Media player, it will play in Second Life.

- You may also retrieve the current URL and/or texture used for the movie

Yes but how does one say, stream it from their own computer? (having happy thoughts of kicking back & watching movies on my land from my personal collection)

what do we use to convert our .AVI or divx format files to .mov quicktime?

QuickTime Player can do this by it's export function, but I'm still wondering how to stream it to SL?

I'm guessing it's pretty much the same as the music, you can't. I would imagine if you have something on your pc that you wish to stream, it will first need to be hosted. Can anyone confirm?

I host music from my machine all the time, but i have to use either SAM or Winamp's shoutcast to do so. What program do we need to get to host movie streaming is what I'm asking. Not gonna pay some company to host my movies for me, my SIM costs enough as it is lol

Google Darwin Streaming Server, was previous threads about this software. I installed this under Fedora core 2, works great.

The problem with streaming real video, is bandwidth. If you do a search on Quicktime someone posted real numbers, but it boiled down to even if you had a good 1 megabit upload connection your only looking at 7-10 people being able to view your stream at one time. And that would be like pretty crappy looking heavy compression.

Now the thing that seems very promising, is to host an XML file somewhere (very low bandwidth) and stream in text video (for banners and such) which in a few posts I saw might be a good posibility!

Real video streaming will be difficult unless you have access to a good bit of bandwidth upstream.

There is a new tab in your land properties called Media. In that tab is the normal url box for music and the new stuff for video. basically it has a similar box like when texturing an object to place a texture in.. a reference texture for the video overlay, then you add a url that points to a movie file (.mov, .mpeg, etc) and hit enter. Once you have done that you will have controls that are the same as music controls when anyone goes onto your land. When you click on the play button, any object with the texture you specified in the settings will be playing the movie in place of that texture. I have noticed that as far as you can see if there is the same texture on objects in anyone elses land, you will see the movie playing on those as well, as long as you are on your land. Once you leave the land, the movie stops (for you) and the controls go away.

You will find there is a lot of configuring of the texture shape, as not all movies will be the same size, so you will have to adjust texture and object size accordingly.

Yes, will be much more need for server space rentals for video streaming with a place with huge bandwidth. If you have that it works quite well. In the preview I was always using links to movie trailers on apple.com. Plenty of badwidth there. lol.
