I started SL in November of 2005 and had maybe 2 crashes and everything always runs pretty smooth until now.
Since the latest version 1.10 I randomly crash. SL just shuts off and crash logger box comes up. There seems to be no connection with certain places as I have crashed in several different sims. I can be on for a few minutes to several hours before it crashes.
I am having a hard time pinpointing what maybe causing it. Doesn't seem to be movement as I crashed when walking, flying and standing still.
The only thing that comes to mind is objects rezzing or sounds as sounds are usually changing/loading or a new texture is rezzing when it crashes. Never a problem before 1.10.
System: Abit NF8 Sempron 2500+ @ 1720mhz 1gig Kingston PC3200DDR 200gig Maxtor 7200 hard drive ATI/Saphire AGP X1600pro 256meg Radeon Comcast Cable 384Kup 6000K down WinXP Home
Installed all latest drivers and game runs great until it crashes. Turned off virus scanners and all other programs to no avail. Fairly fresh install of WinXP. Clean driver install.
I am now going to start turing off the new features in the graphics section and see if that fixes things. I shouldn't have to but will see if that is the problem.

Cache related?
05-30-2006 02:16
I too am still having the random crashes.
I am at work at the moment, and do not have access to SL. However, I have just been thinking about it and am now wondering if perhaps this is somehow related to client-side caching.
Only reason I think this is that, as far as I can recall, every time I have crashed stuff has still been loading. It's either very soon after I login (still loading) or very soon after a TP or change of location. I also attach the fact that on the first 1.10 release the cache WORKED for the first time I ever remember, which seems to indicate some work has been done in this area (although of course, it now appears to be broken again.)
I wonder if it's worth someone testing (as I certainly will when I get home) by clearing their cache and, if possible, setting their client settings so that the cache cannot be used, i.e. setting the reserved cache storage to zero?

I turned off all the new things in the graphics but still crashed.
I am also crashing the same way now that I think about it. Things are loading when I crash. I am going to clear my cache as I have not done it in months and see if that helps. Maybe it was trying to load something from the past that doesn't work the same now. If that doesn't work I will then try setting it to 0. That maybe worst than crashing though. Will see.

Of course, when I got home yesterday I realised you cannot set the cache size to 0. 50Mb is the minimum.
I tried various things last night, but nothing changed.
The only thing that seems to help is standing still and doing absolutely nothing until everything around you has loaded. Once you're in an environment that isn't still loading up, stuff seems to be a lot more stable and you can stay online for hours without issue (unless you move someplace else again) ..
I suspect also that lowering draw distance would also help.
Anyway, fingers crossed LL have figured out what's causing this and will have a fix tonight!?

Good and bad

Well, the newest update is loaded, and from my personal point of view, I think I will maintain that I'm really unhappy with the new version. Before this update today, I had massive amounts of lag, to the point that it was fairly impossible to move around. Also, I would get random crashes, for no discernable reason that I can ferret out. Now the lag problem seems to be much better, but I have crashed 3 times in the last 40 minutes, and again cant figure out why. I hope they get the problems resolved soon.

Well I have yet to try the new update. I did clear my cache yesterday and did not crash at all in the 4 hours I was on.
Now I will update when I log on and see what's new.

Now I cant stay on at all, at 2:30 AM, low usage time. I crashed for no reason, just standing there, and now I cant get on at all. I start to see the world, and poof I'm off again. Clearing caches, changing settings, nothing seems to work. My system is high enough quality that I shouldnt be having these problems, as is my connection. Hopefully, some folks out there will find some solutions and post and help us all out !

Just an update. After clearing cache I thought that was the problem as I only crashed once since my last post. However today I crashed several times in less than an hour. Every time I crashed things were still rezing as I was panning around with the camera. If I stayed still and didn't touch anything until things stopped loaded things seemed fine.
Not sure why it crashes when panning while things are rezzing but pretty sure that is the problem as of now.
Anyhow will see what tomorrows update shall fix or break.
