Bug report I have sent:

Your request has been assigned an ID of [rt.lindenlab.com #141606]

Steps to reproduce the bug:

Run SL without DirectX such as happens when using WINE to run SL under Linux.

Observed results:

SL Log reports:
WARNING No DXDiag provider found! DirectX 9 not installed!
INFO Detected VRAM: 0
INFO Allocated 33554432 bytes of AGP memory
This results in major degrade of client performance to the point of making it too tedious to log on to SL.

Expected results:

SL should default to Edit/Preferences/Adv. Graphics/Video Card Memory settings when it is unable to detect video memory size using DirectX. My video card is a Nvidia with 256MB my performance would be close to windows native if the 256MB was used as per my preferences.

NB: This will explain the packet loss mentioned on other threads too.

Turns out this low frame rate problem was with cedega/winex 3.3.2 (and being forced to use windows 95/98/ME configursation, win2k would crash). Using wine 0.9.2 from www.winehq.com (win2k config) has decent frame rate (but some minor sound popping artifacts).
