I'm growing less and less fond of occlusion culling because of the number of prims which keep vanishing on me, it makes building anything a royal pain. The patch released the other day which was to fix the problem actually made it worse. Now, instead of one prim disappearing here or there. I often have several vanishing at once and taking longer to come back, and there seems to be occasional bouts of intense lag. Of course, I understand it takes time and usually two or three tries to get something right, and I can imagine the tough work it must be to sift through 10000s lines of source code to track down all the bugs which everyone is screaming to get fixed yesterday. So, I sort of feel sympathy for the coders. :)

Aside from that, I do like the new update.

Or walking around inside buildings. Every time a new wall sweeps past your view it stops displaying stuff in front of the avatar, then the camera goes "oh, there's a wall in the way" and moves closer, and you see the empty space in front of you for an instant before it re-renders it.

Also we lost the "reduce draw distance if frame rate drops below..." option, which is really annoying. I liked being able to have my draw distance reasonably high and have it automatically shrink when I started moving.

Yeah... in the past three days, I've been suffering from extreme lag NO MATTER WHERE I GO.

I can turn all my detail down, I can even shrink my window until it's taking up only a fourth of my screen, but nothing helps... SL is becoming more frustrating that fun... >.<

....buuuut, I do really like flexiprims... i have my lighting turned to Sun and Moon only, since I'm already SO laggy, I don't want any extra optiosn on... oh... and Occlusion Cullings doesn't seem to do anything. =|

Just out of curiosity... Did you participate in the test grid before this went live?

It's there to make sure that problems with new versions of SecondLife are found, and hopefully resolved BEFORE the grid is rolled forward.

SecondLife is evolves. Help test where it's going before it is forced upon you and you'll help LL avoid deploying problems like these.

In general I think far too many people are pleased with this update... and using this update to create flexiprims and new lights. A roll-back at this point would be so destructive to so many that a roll-back for the small (and very unfortunate) minority of players with problems is utterly unlikely.

Anyway. I hope the problem is resolved for you soon. Aside from the obvious exception, this update has been, imho, one of the best in my experience, (and I access SL from both a mac and pc.)

I did.

Between 1.9.1.13 and 1.9.1.16 (if I recall correctly, don't hold me to those exact numbers) my performance went from "better than 1.9.0" to "unusable". I had several exchanges with Milo Linden that were very productive, but performance on the preview grid never got more than about half the speed of 1.9.0. When 1.10.0 was released, I found myself having to drop almost every feature to minimum levels to get anywhere near acceptable. I eventually gave up on holding out with my current graphics card until I replaced my existing computer completely and bought a new AGP card. I'm now doing better than under 1.9.0, and the visual quality of the new card is much better for the same settings, but I've now bought a lame duck video card that I won't be able to use after I upgrade my computer because AGP is about dead.

So... they could roll back to something like the 1.9.1.13 rendering and keep the new features, and it'd be a performance win.

crashing
05-30-2006 18:27
I'm finding that the new SL update is causing my computer to crash far too much and even after loggin' out of it I need to reset my modem to even browse the internet. (I just did it in order to type this message of gloom and frustration). All was well before the update...

Q: Does anyone know if it is ok to un-install the new and replace it with the old? I was so much happier back then.lol

Also I noticed that I cannot access the forums from the menu bar and when SL crashes the crash report popup doesn't get activated...

Q: is it worth sending a crash report after SL crashes and the machine has been reset (as I have to) in order to get internet access?

This is not a complaint as such, I'm just hopin' my comments might serve as a pointer to some of the issues that have arisen as a result of my upgrade to v1.10.0.34
