I have waited and waited for someone else to mention something which has only happened to me since 1.7, and which I assumed was normal. I suddenly have wind-wafting wavy clothing and hair. It is rippling and waving in the air all the time...does no one else see it? I have asked around but got a lot of shrugging shoulders and no one (so far) seems to know what I am talking about. Would be glad to know I am not the only one...and whether it is a feature, a bug, a setting that needs changing, or dodgy graphics card. Cali

It's a feature! Introduced in version 1.1 circa October 2003! You know where it says Bump Mapped and Cloth? That's what they mean by cloth.

O....K.....then it is REALLY weird that it has only been working since 1.7 then lol! As far as I know I haven't suddenly changed my settings.... . Also...does everyone have it turned off? I just got blank looks from the people I know. thanks Cali

This effect only works if you have Avatar Vertex Program checked in the Advanced Graphics tab of Preferences. Perhaps this option got turned on for you at some point around the 1.7 upgrade?

From the description it sounds miraculous and possibly worth upgrading for, but I'm thinking maybe it looks crappy or more people would use/talk about it?

Huns Valen was the first to tell me about this. He even had a great video of his coat rippling (which is what prompted me to ask in the first place), although I don't know where it is now.
If memory serves me correctly, I believe the cloth effect is a Cg shader effect. Anyone who knows more, please elaborate.

It's a vertex shader -- code which modifies the 3-D position that each vertex in a mesh is rendered at, based on some algorithm. "Shader" in this context is a generic term referring to code that affects mesh transformation, lighting, reflection, bumpiness, etc. Don't let the term "vertex shader" confuse you, as it doesn't actually have a direct effect on the way an object is "shaded" in the traditional sense.

I turned it on, and nothin...got a GeForce 5500 128MB card...should work, but I see nothin...any ideas? Nevermind...upon reading more carefully...I see that I needed to have avatar vertex on...that's kinda cool...now I know why some folks prefer non-prim hair.

wear "baggy" pants / clothing with cloth bump mapping on, it should move slightly, its no big deal really. Look at end of clothing , very slight movement. turn on this to see Avatar Vertex Program : on Avatar Rendering : Bump Mapped & Cloth

I am able to see the clothes and hair move as well. You will only see the hair move if the avatar has non-prim hair and you mostly see the clothes move when they are baggy and the avatar is in fly mode. MJ

I've been using the bump mapped & cloth option for a while now...didnt know about it till a few months back. It's pretty cool; I went back to non-prim hair for a while lol ...Anyway, the slider in appearance: "Pants/shirt wrinkles" doesnt show any difference set at 0 or 100 for me. Though the clothes/hair do blow in the wind, & the bump map water also works great for me. Anyone see a difference in their clothing when they move that slider?

It used to work last time I tried it, but I hate the effect so I don't use it. I vaguely remember it sort of alpha'd the bump map clothing layer so it would be more or less visible.

I just found this--it looks ineffective for me as well as of today. I remember when it did work. Bizarre how it's not gone more noticed, but alas, here's the time to start.

I just assumed wrinkles were one of those things that only worked when you had all the "set my FPS down to 0.1 OK thanks" options turned on.
