Greatly increased "culling" and slower loading of Geometry

I posted this on the end of a thread about another bug and it's getting no attention. I checked all my other bugs about 1.9 against the announced list, and this one (the biggest one) doesn't appear so here goes.

Before 1.9, even on the worst laggiest log-in, I would generally see all the objects (geometry) with grey loading textures and then all the textures would slowly appear to populate it. *Occiasionally* the Geometry would take a short while to appear also, but this was very rare indeed.

Now, everywhere I go the Geometry is basically absent.

If I fly off my platform to the market on the other side of the sim, I can land on an empty landscape and watch as all the geometry covered with the grey textures appear object by object. The textures follow on top of the geometry and it's all fairly snappy as far as the time it takes but it quite ruins the "immersion" for me.

If I then fly back to the platform on the other side of the sim, the same thing happens, virtually nothing is there until I stop flying, then the objects appear one by one as if from some culling void, and the textures follow suit quite a bit afterwards.

In some ways, the overall speed of ressing is (ever so slightly), snappier, but its disconcerting to be able to "outfly the world" all the time. I haven't changed any of my settings, but the entire world now acts like I turned my draw distance to zero or someone moved the cullling lever to the "always on" position. The only way I can get my immersion back is by slowing down to a gentle walk and even then I can see culled objects in the distance appearing and disappearing as I walk sometimes.

It seems to me that this really happens in a big way when you are physically flying between sims also. If you TP to a sim, the geometry around the hub loads much faster almost as if it's preloaded, but if you get up and physically fly over to the next sim, it will be empty until you stop flying for a second. This sounds suspiciously to me like a communication lag between the avatar and the sever when crossing sim boundaries which would finger the new method of communication between sims as the culprit.

Someone please fix this, it is so annoying and changes the whole tone of the game for me. I would rather go back to being slightly slower and have all the geometry of the world stay "alive" as I walk through it.

I don't *want* my living room to slowly appear object by object every time I visit it. I want to pretend that I am in a real world not spend half my time looking at the grey underpinnings of it appearing and disappearing.

I am sorry to hear you have this problem Dianne. It sounds kind of like how things have been working for me for months now.

I was sort of waiting for the new renderer but now I read that the new renderer is not likely to come anytime soon because it's too difficult to fit it into the existing codebase.

If they are smart they are doing a parallel development of all of these ideas into a "SL 2.0" kind of product, which could be what all the rumors about "competition" might boil down to. But for now, I would like my immersion back, including non-dissapearing geometry and the elimination of the Tron texture.

Possibly they have buggered up the geometry for good and we will hear nothing about it cause they essentially can't fix it, but the loading texture really bothers me because you *know* that its an easily changeable thing, but that they have the gall to simply stonewall all the people who want it changed or changeable.

That kind of "pat on the head, we know what's right for you" stuff really burns my cookies. The UI team at LL needs a good box round the ears IMO.

I've been seeing this type of behavior for a while too and I think I've gotten used to it, so it's difficult to say if it's gotten worse or not.

But in many ways, it's a good thing. The worst thing is for the client to get so bogged down that you can't move. One of the ways that it can maintain client FPS is by throttling the rate at which new geometry is displayed.

I agree that it destroys the immersiveness, but I much prefer this behavior to a frozen client that is overwhelmed by all the new things it has to draw.
