I think profiles are seriously outdated, and with the new technology available within Secondlife there is no reason not to make an overhaul to them.
Profiles should make the move in the direction to popular social network profiles like Myspace, Facebook, or even Flickr with customization on the user end with plugin APIs for the layout like what myspace uses. That might be a little too heavy for SL, but even a static standard layout would be preferred to the current in-game design.
Move profiles off the Asset server, and into a web-based server. There are a number of reasons for this, but most of which being, it takes a load off the already overloaded asset server and helps break it up a bit.
For issues regarding textures in current profiles, or adding new ones from the asset server in SL to an asset pool in a web-based service, there is a relatively simple solution. Add a feature to the right-click menu in SL, with the option to "Send to profile inventory."
What would this do? It would directly transfer from the asset server to your web-based profile inventory for images. So users can both upload images through the website, and through SL. The transfer would never put the image in the hands of the user, and it could keep all the permissions from the original creator, and even carry a 'owner/creator' signature with the file.
This would allow for faster loading profiles, more customization, and as vastly popular, a bigger spotlight for all your friends and favorite picks. You would be able to give us a lot more room, and a better layout for displaying all of this information.
Not only does it offload weight from the asset server, but it offloads weight from the individual sims. On top of this, it opens the doors to a much wider variety of social interaction through profiles, like adding RSS feeds, direct links to personal webpages, and linking other social networking sites right into your profile.

The first time someone hits me with a profile snowball or asks me to join their profile mafia wars I am seriously going to lose it.

Well you know if they do convert, they could leave the default profile the way it is, but opt in for users who want to take control and make a more custom profile. That way it wouldn't hurt any users who like the current profile, but allow for a lot more customization with the ones who do. And if security is an issue, just have a popup warning when viewing a profile that has custom content. "This user is using a web-based profile yada yada yada we are not responsible for the links displayed yada yada yada... view at your own risk."
