The Big Map Works Badly

The big fancy map works very badly for me. It often takes minutes for the land to show up at all. I see the gray loading textures frequently. Having to zoom in to make avatar dots show up stinks. The terrain textures stay blurry too long. Not having a list of sim names stinks. Not able to paste in locations in the form "secondlife://simname//x/y/z stinks.

I wish the World Map persisted longer for me too--pains me while I'm out and about and after a relog, it disappears and has to update again. And again. And again. O, I'd better do something about it. Let me communicate this to the developers... esp. it's been going on awhile.

Thank you.
I believe the map is one of the major reasons I lock up. If I don't open up the map. I can play for quite awhile. Unfortunately, I'm shopping for new land and I need to use the map. Once I crash and start back up, I'm good to go for another hour or so. It seems to be overloading my virtual memory in my machine.

Ironic isn't it? I'm looking to buy new land in a game that is performing terrible? I guess I enjoy SL too much to walk away right now.

I almost wonder if the old version could be brought back until all of these bugs could be worked out. I wouldn't miss the flexi prims and the lighting terribly much. :-)

The mainland works ok for me but I have a lot of trouble with island sims. I have to zoom in on them and then it takes a long time to appear. It definately worked a lot better awhile ago.

The map performs real-time updates which drag down computer performance. Especially if you have a lot of target icons checked off (people, popular places, land for sale...etc.)

It sometimes brings my computer to a slow crawl if not a complete stop.

I plan on uninstallling and reinstalling SL .....just waiting for the latest update. Hopefully it will help. Seeing as how they had two updats in two days, it may be a good time to do the re-install.

The big map has work terribly for me since it first appeared. It never works in a desirable fashion.

I couldn't count how many times I've installed the program since then. What a silly suggestion.

Having to zoom in to make avatar dots appear isn't a bug, it's a feature, built into the program to keep from using excessive processing capactity and bandwidth. A feature I don't like. The high resolution images are cute, but I'd rather see the green dot clusters. I don't always select destinations by what the overhead view of the terrain looks like. I do pick out green dot clusters to either go where there are people or avoid people.

I get the green dots way before the actual pictures/sim names for island sims.

does the map update in realtime?
06-08-2006 10:43
I was under the impression that the map was updated at regular, non-real-time, intervals. I don't see any way that the map *could* update in realtime. The grid resources required would be massive. Right?

The terrain images are not real time, they are updated periodically. For me, the system is not able to deliver the non-real-time images at a desirable rate. "Desirable rate" means "click on map button, perfectly formed map appears instantly." If the map has to take a discernable amount of time to display, it shouldn't be longer than one quarter second. A quarter second is perceivable, but still feels much like instantaneous.

We have detail selection capability for other parts of the display, like avatars or trees - perhaps we could have one for the map that would let us have a lower res map which could get get displayed faster. l

I hope it works. I play the game 7 hours or more a day and i have not even had any problems remotely these.

Good Luck

SINCE I DON`T have this problem I can`t relate to this sort of useless remark by you.

Then Again I don`t mess with the client working like by passing the splash screen and etc like some do. The MORE one tinkers with the client the more your have problems with it. And NOT Reinstalling is not a silly idea hun.........
