Please rollback to the previous version and stop wasting your time and ours. Work on your crappy update offline and get it fixed instead of putting everyone through this garbage! LET US PLAY! LET US PLAY! LET US PLAY!

NO! No rollbacks!
For those of us who've made things since Tuesday...that's really NOT a viable option.
Ciao- Jacq

I made several things today.... though not until the secret got out on how to attach things without using the inventory rightclick -> Attach To... that was broken.

NO Rollback, please!!!
09-15-2006 00:25
No rollback... I just created a class series of jewelry sets... 232 prims on a necklace, plus notecards on each one... rollback would be the end of me...and I might as well just roll over and quit...lol.

Rollback of the *software* doesn't imply rollback of the *database* and sims.

I just can't understand why after they had all this time to get it right we get the same thing. Another buggy update where things that were working are now broke. Days of interruped service and just now I got kicked with no warning while I had a script open with changes that I had not saved!
I think more planning and testing is in order before they attempt this update again.
I agree with a rollback.

Look there will be no rollbacks or I will go absolutely mad. It's bad enough having to try and build/replicate an entire priory but all of that work destroyed would be too much.
On a side note this already happened..portions of my priory being deleted.
But still, no rollbacks!

Each update seems to be harder and harder for them to fix. This one is the worst as far as I can remember...but then again, I'm somewhat of a noob. My partner and I have been selling our land...getting ready to leave this place. So far, it appears that we're making the right decision. The SIMs are volatile now. The users' computers need to be configured perfectly for the program to work. Any group of people gathered together to chat or mingle causes huge packet loss. I guess we need to all stand by ourselves and remain in a vacant SIM to "enjoy" the SL experience. I'm at a loss...I have no idea what Linden Labs is trying to create here. Cutting edge 3d experience? Lets decipher what that really means....cutting edge means that all of the users computers also need to be cutting edge correct? and doesn't that just create an elitist minoritysociety? It seems to defeat the purpose of what Linden Labs set out to do...which was to create a 3d world where people could interact with each other...while in the meantime making money. seems to me they're failing on all accounts.....if not now, then soon

I can...
09-15-2006 11:49
I've been here merely a month and *I* can believe it.
How sad is that?
I think what they really ought to do is give a flat amount of Lindens to all residents for the inconvenience. Something that says "We're sorry", like L$5,000.
That number isn't high enough to cause economic havoc, but is enough for people to feel good about (I'd think). Not to mention, someone like me would just go out and spend it and boost the economy anyway, so.....
Then again, the sheer effort to implement a mass pay-out would probably cause the grid to go down for 14 hours, 37 minutes and 29 seconds, so perhaps not a great idea after all
*sighs*

Production
09-15-2006 11:56
It is way past the time that Linden Labs should have transitioned from a software development/beta environment to a truely reliable production environment.
Major changes should not be happening on a weekly basis but monthly or quarterly. Major changes should be TESTED so that they do not keep introducing more problems than they fix. Most updates should be able to be done in a rolling fashion (including DB updates). This is possible and usually done in production systems. Changes should be grouped into modules so that items what do turn out to be problems can be rolled back without affecting the entire environment.

I understand they have a preview area. Perhaps several test servers for each update and an incentive for players to use them might eliminate some of the problems.

Rollback of the software, not rollback of the database. There should be no reason they can't roll back to a previous version of the code without trashing all the content. It may take a little work, but it would give them a chance to get it right without all the firefighting. I also think they need to consider separating the client and in-game enhancements into parallel development releases, where possible. Especially the XML UI stuff.
