Change to group IM system

As part of the new feature proposal system I am posting to this forum to elicit feedback before I make a formal feature proposal.

Suggestion: Only send the message "....has left this session" when users who have _actively participated in the discussion_ during their current IM session leave.

The IM server only needs to keep track of a single bitfield flag which identifies if the user has posted a comment in their current session. When they close their session, this flag is checked before the "... has left this session" message is sent.

This is similar to feature proposal 2557 - "Joe Sombody, has left this session" needs to go
but does not remove the notification altogether.

Comments?

That is a great idea! Solves the problem of hundreds of messages, and still lets you know if the people involved in the discussion are still there. I've been meaning to drop out of some groups just because I hate all those unnecessary messages, just haven't gotten around to actually doing it yet.

Since the update I have had to leave several groups (not sure if there is a connection with the update, just noticed the problem after the update). Anyone know why the response to anyone saying anything in a group message is the immediate leaving of at least 30 people? How can anyone have a conversation in group if all comments are hidden among 30 or more "joe slowmo has left" messages surrounding the "real" messages?

Thumbs up to the proposal.

I'm pretty sure I've read a Linden comment "That's the way it's supposed to work"; i.e., only give the quit message when someone participated.

I know its a bug but the display of these messages only highlights the need for this feature. Even when the bug is fixed, in large groups there is lots of unnecessary traffic generated by these messages. If there are 1000 memers of a group and everyone leaves due to other people leaving, thats up to a million messages being sent around the grid. It is no wonder the group servers are overloaded right now.

It's an interesting proposal. The session stuff drives me nuts, I get messages from sessions I've closed. Would have been better to post it on Jira
