Name Spoofing

What will LL do about name spoofing once things move over to Unicode?

For example, there is a difference between...

http://www.paypal.com

...and...

http://www.paypаl.com

They are not the same site, because one "a" is replaced with "а".

Will someone be able to register a name like "Hаnk Ramos" (which is different from Hank Ramos) and go around giving me a bad name?

"Ramos" is no longer available :)
I'd say that anyone who's name is worth stealing has an equally unavailable surname.
Can't really see much of a problem in that.

Whoah there, you elitist bastard! :D

Seriously though, even the noobiest of noobs should be protected from this sort of chicanery. Chaos is good; confusion, not so much. Mightn't someone file an abuse report including someone name as viewed? I suppose the Lindens who handle the report could see that it was spoofed; maybe that's good enough. But even still, the reputation of that user, in the mind of the reporter, would still be marred, no?

In fact, I think the lindens wouldn't necessarily come across the knowledge of the name actually being spoofed, because when they search, they will type it using the "unspoofed" characters. At least.. that's how *I* think it'll happen...

I was under the impression that the move to unicode will only affect text entry within the client, not the name registration process at the website. Am I mistaken here?

Dunno. Just wanted to make sure LL had thought of and/or taken care of any potential problem.

Besides, I could just as easily get an account called Zuzl, Zuz1, Zuzj, Zvzi... no unicode in there.

Yes, but none of "l, 1, j" are homologues of "i". In Unicode, it's quite easy to get two code points with the same glyph.

Hank don't worry, LL seens to have closed the hole in the join script with the use of closed last names. Secondly the join script does not support unicode characters (I couldn't get it to accept them).

The only way anyone is going to steal your name is with your password.

Well I think that the ability for people to have their name in their own alphabet is more important than the small possibility of name spoofing.

But then things get ugly with find, having everything romanized helps. How is someone who doesn't have a Japanese, Chinese, Greek, or Russian keyboard going to search?

So, no having to search for 對象 or 目的 or Предмет or Αντικείμενο?

I'd have to get everyone to install a font that includes it. (I don't think people that it all that seriously. How odd :p )

But... yeah! :D
