Alright, the new lighting introduced in 1.10.0 was amazing. It added much more depth to avatars and objects. I also noticed a "vivid glow" that appeared on avatars when 1.10.0(33) was released. Well, since the optional 1.10.0(34) release I've noticed a change in the lighting on the avatars once again. Is this just me? I've updated my drivers, checked my settings, etc. I searched the forums for anything similar to what I am experiencing. I see nothing in the release notes that have anything to do with a change in the way light renders on our avatars. ---------------------------- 1.10.0(34) May 26, 2006 Bug fixes * Resolved a compatibility issue for PowerPC users running Mac OS X 10.3.9 * Fixed a bug causing HUD objects to work incorrectly * Fixed a bug causing child prims on new HUD objects to remain invisible * Fixed a bug causing objects to disappear due to occlusion culling * Other residents should now be heard after unmuting them and relogging * The Mac autoupdate utility should properly show download progress ---------------------------- Did I miss something here? Anyone else notice this? I am fine without the vivid glow but I'm just confused as to why it suddenly vanished ...This is what I am talking about (Same spot, same fixed sun, same skin/av/settings):

Yeah, i hear you lost.
It really sucks in some areas where the light intesity is so damn high that your avatar looks 100& bright that there is NO detail at all it kind of makes me mad, I had hardware lighting at my store and it looked terrific in midnight but in normal lighting it made my avatar look like crap. I think the glow of your avatar depends on the settings of hardware lighting but i could be wrong... anyways sometimes my avi looks great in hardware lighting and at other times i look horrible so i dunno what its all about but hopefully ill get used to it

The "vivid glow" is called specular (or "specularity" and is a vertex/pixel (can never figure out the difference) shader effect. I don't notice a change between 1.10.0.33 (not 10.0) and 1.10.0.34. You'd have to compare with the EXACT light position to see if there is, indeed, a change in specular intensity. Note: video driver updates can affect this if the way the drivers handle pixel/vertex shading has changed so I'd bet that's the reason for the change vs. something in SL.

Heya, thanks for answering. The snapshots are taken in the exact same place and lighting, also the sim they were taken on has a set sun position. I updated my drivers when 1.10.0 (lol@10.0) was first introduced, so not sure why it would change by itself between 1.10.0(33) and 1.10.0(34). I also notice the difference with other skins and avs, others I've spoken to also notice a change.

I think the new (34) version looks better, looks more real to me, so looks like a good change to me. I do see a difference, that is for sure, but think the change looks better then the original.

I've never seen my avi glow like your avi but it looks like 10x better with it!

Yeah I see what you mean garbage. I don't think my av shows up that bright unless im surrounded by really intense lighting... I think I have gotten use to the change in lighting, maybe it only showed up that vividly for me? ah well Would be nice to have that affect back, just less extreme. Either way, the new lighting affects are amazing

Ya, thats true! <33 harware lighting it can make SL look really amazing most of the time, unless your in a area where the lighting intensity is like 100000000 but thats really rare but i do see it in SOME areas! Whats weird is that sometimes it looks great in midnight but then in normal day time everything is super bright so i dunno maybe they should have a option for "only at night" or something.

It's not just you, I saw the same thing. The previous version the avatars had a very bright glow, especially with light skin and clothes. After the latest update it's back to how it was which is a much flatter look. I'm a bit torn actually to which I preferred. I think somewhere inbetween would be great

Personally, I prefer the more "matte" appearance.

They've totally broken lighting with this new update, it hardly affects prims at all Make it the way it was in the initial 1.10 release again, please! Or at least let me adjust it from my preferences!

I think it's near perfect to how it is now, honestly.

I don't see why there can't just be an option in the avatar appearance edit mode to change avatar specular ("shine" . It would be cool if avatars were briefly shinier when coming out of water, too (complete with decreasing drips ala Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation).

That would be quite cool, although it would be problematic on avs that were a mix of prims and mesh. I don't know about you guys but I seem to be glowing in the dark: http://imagesocket.com/view/glowinthedark2e2.jpg*CS* Charmed Skin - 20 (neutral 1), light but not THAT light!

Er, Eata, to glow in the dark actually requires darkness to glow in. That picture is in bright sunlight... Check if you're wearing a light-emitting attachment.
