i just found that the SecondLife client doesn't like when you want to run it full-screen at 1280x1024 at 75Hz refresh rate.
it says "failed to switch resolution to 1280 by 1024." when you're in 75Hz refresh rate.
instead it goes windowed 1280x1024 (with the Windows task bar at the bottom)

It might be a specific issue with your puter? It works fine for me.

Mine runs windowed too. 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz. I like it that way though. I don't have to toss SL to the task bar in order to launch my browser or check my email.
Viewsonic VA912b monitor with nVidia 7200LE adaptor.

i run 1280x1024 - 75hz all the time with no issues, check your driver settings
