Screaming Prims!

Here's a possible bug ( to help further my determination not to build in SL atm :( ) ...

- Create a texture.
- Make it COPY+MOD+NO TRANSFER
- Give it to another AV...

- That person then creates a nice new prim and places the texture on the prim...

the prim then shouts .. "Unable to add item!"

duh ?

please advise. Is this a bug likely to fixed in 2007 or is it meant to shout like that every time you add a no-transfer texture to a prim ?

[ I should add, the textures appear to bind to the prims perfectly ok, it just seems to make the prims shout whenever texture is applied ... has to be a bug surely ? ]

Did you give them full-perms on the texture? You have to have copy-rights iirc to place it on an object.

Wasn't I clear ?

Make it COPY+MOD+NO TRANSFER

Surely that should be enough rights to allow peaceful texturing ?

Why should a prim shout anyway ? seems totally odd to me.

What I really want to know is if anyone else has seen this happen and whether or not it's LL policy to disallow texturing with anything other than FULL permission textures. I think this must be a bug as COPY+MOD is surely good enough permission to allow a single user to use a texture. ( It used to be, when did it change ? )

I have seen and delt with it for some amount of weeks now actually (and sent bug reports, AND talked to live help about it with a basically "we'll look into it" and nothing else, and it's been bugging the heck out of me. As a side effect, any textures that do not have full perms do not show up in the texture picker. As such I have to drop the texture from inventory onto a prim, then edit what I want to, using the eyedropper on that prim to then access the texture I want to use. Not fun, especially since it's such a shouty event. Do that, then pull a copy of that prim off and see your chat fill with shouty chat. :/

Oh, and Haravikk, no you should not have to have full rights to put a texture on a prim. You should be able to put ANY texture on a prim, if it is no copy it should then simply be moved from your inventory to the prim.

Thanks Skye, I guess we just have to hang on for the bug fix!

Which, frankly, gives me no reason for hope :(

Yes this is very very annoying, what little building I actually do always seems to involve some no transfer textures in my inventory (ie the superb Rezolutions Tiki stuff) and thus a consequent spamming of my peaceful sim by prims angry at my temerity.

Please could this get some fix - it took me ages to find out why they didn't appear in the texture browser too start with (no transfer textures don't appear if Apply Immediately is ticked - thank you to whomever pointed that out to me!).

Just say no to screaming prims !

Thank you, thank you Tangletwigs! I will look at the apply immediately thing, as not seeing them in the picker was more annoying than the shouting prims. Much gratitude for that little hint! :)

Oh, and Lauk.. please PLEASE don't stop building! I spend ever so much time wandering your builds for inspiration. I NEED my daily dose of your stuff. :D

(wanders off waiting for grid to come back up to buy even MORE of Lauk's stuff as an incentive heh)

Please don't get discouraged.

solution - ONLY use Full perm textures
01-10-2007 09:47
having textures in your inventory that are not full perms is just asking for trouble
I can recall a friend who build a nice building and had a devil of a time trying to figure out why she couldnt sell it, turned out ONE of her textures in a nonvisible prim was textured with a bad texture.

Save yourself the hassles. Nearly all texture makers sell full perm textures and you should only buy those textures anyway.
Every single NO trans texture that I found and liked I was able to find elsewhere or just send a pic of it to TRU and they can help find you the texture you need.

Asking for trouble ? Only if you don't what you're doing or not experienced it before.

It's what's meant to happen. It can be frustrating when it happens at first for sure, but don't use no-transfer items in stuff you plan to sell.

I'd be surprised if you found my textures on the web, and probably a little annoyed too ;)

I was planning to release the entire set of textures I created for Lauk's Nest as part of a larger building kit. But it'll have to wait a while. I've made it very clear in the documentation that anything the textures are applied to will not be transferrable.

Those that sell textures with full perms are normally re-selling items they got from the web in the first place, the ethics of which is discussed in detail elsewhere. I know some people are honest and will pay to use things, but unfortunately most are not. Full perm textures spread across the grid like a virus. ... "here have this one" ... and I'm not saying it's always a bad thing either.

But in this case I'd like to get some small renumeration for my work and no transfer effectively means I'm selling a license and giving my permssion to each single user for their own use only.
