Sim performance issues.

For a long time, my estate managers and I have been keeping an eye on the sim performance of over a dozen class 4 and 5 sims (currently 18 of them) with moderate to heavy usage.

It used to be we'd get performance issues with image cache under certain 'typical' conditions that were rather predictable.

Often our most heavily loaded class 4's would need a restart every few days to take care of images time spiking phenomenally high, and our sims with higher numbers of scripts had a few issues with scripts slowing. Okay, not too terribly bad; a periodic restart and all was fine again.

Nowadays, or in the past weeks up to now, we've noticed the server side is more 'fragile' - it doesn't take much to get us into image cache issues or need a restart.

It's a bit hard to categorise anecdotally, but I suspect we have more susceptibility to say, script or physics issues. This is new behaviour and when one is restarting a sim a few times a night it's certainly different than when it was once maybe every few days to a week.

Now, did anything change? Of course it has, because these sims are in constant flux - old and new structures, visitors &c. But no, there hasn't been any major event or change of typical usage in months and months.

Something's clearly changed, and while my evidence is fairly circumstantial it doesn't seem to be us, or our visitors.

There have also been substantive reports of presence issues, sims just crashing for no discernable reason, so on and so forth lately that has not been happening for months prior. I feel it can't be just us.

I've asked folks to put away textures and scripts that might be not so interesting to have lying out, so we are already doing our part as best we can.

Has anyone else noticed a modest but persistent drop in serverside robustness over time?

Not as bad as that really rough coupla days a few weeks back, but, pretty bad regardless?

It's like the image cache time will spike quite high and keep spiking at the slightest sniffle, nowadays.

I can't speak from the same kind of experience that you have, since I'm not a sim owner, but I can say that as a daily visitor to several themed sims that have been fairly static with regard to structures and scripts and tenants, that there have indeed been noticeable differences.

I've noticed general weirdness in some sims I've been visiting. mainly script slowdown even though nothing has changed.

Actually, now that you mention it, yeah. I lost complete internet activity here today for a few minutes and my user ping was still reporting a 2 digit number.

Not quite 3 weeks, I think...

@ Desmond Shang:

I found this thread researching my similar suspicions based upon recent experiences.

I am in SL all day and notice many of the same conditions/symptoms in my 2 sims that you note as well. I am just starting to try to measure my experiences and locate the source(s) of the issues and it seems that you have much battle time already.

I do not think it is my sims either for the Top Scripts list a performance demand averaging around 3 milliseconds so this does not seem a likely culprit. Also, lag periods are intermittent in both duration and degree.

Also keep in mind that not all server side issues are reported publicly by LL so we might chasing our tails on occasion as well. Because of this, and especially with the limited user reporting available, it is very difficult to troubleshoot.
