Sigh. Can we have FFMPEG support, now?

Hello,
I am glad somebody else other than me is posting about problems with Quicktime. I hope this issue is addressed soon because my project is on hold because of this. I am even doing a bulk upgrade of the graphics cards on machines for every body on the project, (hoping) that this would fix the problem. But my gut feeling still is that the graphics cards upgrade will *not* the problem because I had Quicktime related crashes with even with better ATI and Nvidia cards. But I am following LL's support advice: ie the problem is with Graphics cards, versions of quicktime, versions of drivers etc.... in my case, the problem is compounded by the fact that I use many laptops, and it seems that drivers for laptops are not updated as frequently as it is the case for PC platforms.

Now this is purely obeservation of an admittedly small group of AVs in SL. It seems like the current version of Quicktime (7.1 I believe) is considerably more crashy than Quicktime 6. If you can possibly back down to Quicktime 6 you ma well see a dramatic reduction in crashes.

I personally suffer about 90% less crashes with 6 than others with 7

Shaky stats I know but maybe it's worth a try. :)

QT just stinks in general, what would you guys suggest they should use that is free and would support SL better?

Perhaps they should check out FFMPEG. The Quicktime implementation in SL is an admitted (by Lindens) first effort by a new coder. It was a learning project so that he could "get familiar with the codebase." And that is where it has stayed since day one. For them to lead you on a goose hunt trying to "fix" your system when they know their implementation of Quicktime is at fault is just damned inexcusable. I wouldn't (and won't) stand for any of that nonsense.

A friend of mine was driven out of business trying to run a theater in SL, because SL's streaming video implementation is just teh suxxors. His videos were hosted at DREAMHOST and he had the same crashing problems we all have. He finally gave up.
