OK. I've loaded the 1.7.0 release, and one subsequent update since then. I'm on a Mac that meets the required performance specs, and which ran SL fine before the upgrade. Here's some observations on my post-upgrade experiences so far. I am certainly looking forward to more updates to resolve the initial stumbling after this major release.

Failures:

Slow login time: The first update helped some, but it's still slow.

Crashes frequently. :(

Incorrect L$ balance displayed in upper right of screen: Drops the comma and subsequent digits if you have a balance over L$1,000, and are on a Mac. Account history shows the correct balance. Haven't yet tried to buy anything, so I don't know if it affects my ability to spend L$.

Incomplete rezzing of surroundings: The one time that I was stable enough to climb into my hot tub and relax with a friend, the walls of the building I was in kept un-rezzing and coming back again. Mostly they were un-rezzed. The hot tub and our Avatars were nice and sharp, but the walls, which should be translucent shoji screens, were untextured grey translucent panels.

Slow world rez: We teleported to somewhere else, blaming this on lag, and it was even worse there - the world wouldn't rez in enough to be at all playable. Everything remained fragmentary and transparent. Store vendors were impossible to use. This morning I was on for 10 min or so and the world around me never did rez in. It was actually worse than yesterday.

Teleport problems: A friend was unable to offer me a link to teleport to their location. But I was able to teleport to the nearest telehub for a store located in Find.

Inaccurate mapping fix on a friend: At one point my friend teleported away, to a different sim, and was unable to offer me a teleport to join them. I went to their profile and told it to map them for me. The location fix that it gave me for them insisted they were in the center of the sim I was in, and about 20 M below the surface of a lake.

In Mouselook, even when 'show Avatar in Mouselook' is NOT selected, I see fragmentary bits of my Avatar's 'furry avatar' attachments when I move (my tail and muzzle). This was also an issue in the 1.6 release, but wasn't as bad in the older release.

Successes: (Yes, there are a few)

Multi-select drag and wear from Inventory worked. Yay!

Can see the Classifieds. Searching was extremely slow, but at least they were there.

The Mac client has a serious problem in the UI code I think.

I'm crashing regularly when opening UI windows. At first it's ok, then after half an hour or so, i can crash it every time simply by opening the prefs window. I've had the same from the map, the groups window and the about land window.

Also sound stops working after a while, perhaps 1/2 to 3/4 hour.

Also alpha rendering is appalling.

And the crash reporter crashes !

Apart from that it's great! :D

( just wish i could stay in-world for more than 1/2 hour )

[edit]
I filed bug reports for what that's worth, hopefully we'll see some patches very soon !

Well, I think I'm just going to make myself a nice cup of herbal tea, and go play on some other on-line forums for a few days. Maybe check back this weekend, and see if anything in SL has improved. I'm eager to get back to SL, but the current buggy state just isn't worth it.

Wasn't this sort of trouble supposed to be worked out in the preview grid, before releasing this to the general public?

*Sigh*

*Kicks back and tries to relax*

Forgot to mention one glitch. Inventory items taking forever to appear when a folder is opened. I dropped an item into a folder, then opened that folder. The only thing that showed was the newly dropped item. 20 or so other items in the folder didn't appear until after I had opened and closed the folder a few times, and then just left it open while I made some coffee. The items did all eventually appear, but it was very disconcerting.

Update after 1.7.1(2) release
10-28-2005 06:21
Loaded 1.7.1(2) late last night, and played briefly this morning.

Observations on earlier issues:

Slow login time: Greatly improved now.

Crashes frequently: Hasn't crashed yet, but I haven't used it long enough to say this is resolved.

Incorrect L$ balance displayed in upper right of screen: Fixed

Incomplete rezzing of surroundings: Better, but still not fixed. I get the textures on my surroundings, but often lose them again. Cached texture details are getting lost almost as fast as they load. Very annoying to see 20% or more of my surroundings incompletely rezzed.

Slow world rez: Improved.

Teleport problems: Haven't tried since this release came out.

Inaccurate mapping fix on a friend: Not checked yet.

In Mouselook, even when 'show Avatar in Mouselook' is NOT selected, I see fragmentary bits of my Avatar's 'furry avatar' attachments when I move (my tail and muzzle).: Still a bug.
