[rt.lindenlab.com #803658] AutoReply: Bug: E:1 P:1 Preview O:W V1.15.0.1 (Sandbox Island)[Building] "Selection "magic" beam finds camera, not object" rt.lindenlab.com #803658

These two bugs were officially reported on April 21 on the beta grid. The Linden who came to check on it couldn't reproduce it. But I was finally able to trace it to something-to-do with one of the settings.xml files. Once SL is closed, just delete any instances of a file starting in "settings" and ending in ".xml"

"Camera rotating around itself" (fix)
This bug, introduced in SL 1.15.0 (2), can be fixed by quitting SL, and MANUALLY deleting your settings.xml file.

(it's located in "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Secondlife\user_settings\";)

So, delete:
settings_firstlook.xml
settings_beta.xml
settings.xml

But don't worry about:
crash_settings.xml

Next time you load Secondlife(.exe) it will create a "fresh" settings file, that will reset whatever errant setting is giving this zero-vector when attempting to focus the camera on an object. (note: for me, the camera ONLY failed to orbit prims.. worked fine on avatars, attachments, and the ground.)

thank you, winter.

i did notice this in the beta grid (that, plus my armpits were looking very freaky...!?), but i haven't seen it in the full release. it is annoying, and im glad there's a relatively simple fix :)

Possibly related to https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-512 ? What do you guys think? Post in there if you have more info; thanks for the tip, Winter.

ask Milo Linden about it. he saw it happeneing to me, even watched my focus crosshairs do wacky things.

I think pursuit of the issue was abandonned when I killed the settings files and it "went away"

"magically fixed itself" is not a good sign at all.

I'm really beginning to worry. I haven't seen any of these problems yet. No Blurred text. No wierd graphics, no change in camera behavior. I even bought Lindens this morning. I'm beginning to feel left out.

wanna see blurry text?

make a white or lightly coloured prim. Set world sun to daylight. Now close your "History" chat window, and look at the default "pop up" chat and IM text as it "Scrolls" on the lower left corner. Put the camera so that the text is over the white area.

Not blurry enough you say?

make a prim.
Make red floating text.

Now green.

Now, make white, and position it so that you view that white text against the light coloured background you previously created.

Not blurry enough???: try "Cornflower blue!"

The blurry text most people are complaining about, is the new "Anti-aliased" dropshadow implementation. Anti aliased text is in fact "blurry" compared to bitmapped text. And all the text was just changed over to antialiasing. The newest and most obvious of these new changes, is in floating text, where the once-crisp "drop shadow" is now a vague greyish halo around the letters.

Once you fix the bug using winter's approach, see the problem manifest itself again by switching RenderGlow to TRUE.

I noticed this same problem occurs when you set RenderDynamicReflections to TRUE.
I am using a Radeon X800 XL.
