I wanted to use three exclamations, but have been brought up to believe that three would be a sign of insanity. This does drive me insane, though, having been pushed to the brink by the ver. 1.11 ENTER key fiasco. So:

 TAB key to look at speaker is borked!!! It used to be nice to use this simple keyboard action, since we don't have stereophonic hearing of chat and can't easily detect where the speaker is to face her. SL used to make up for this deficit by the neat action of the TAB key. Hit Tab and Wunderbar! one is looking at the person who just spoke. Hit it again, when another person speaks and you look at them! I loved that feature/action and used it often! Now, it seems to be gone.

Put it back to the way it used to was!

Please.

PS there is an irony here: Last week, one of the messages of the day that greeted us during login was a reminder of how to use the TAB key to look at the most recent speaker.

We can tab from toolbar button to toolbar button now, partially. The tab sequence is not set in a functional manner; you can't tab from one row of toolbar buttons to the next.
I never experienced any powerful desire to tab from one toolbar button to the other, but if it is going to be implemented it should be done in a logical manner.

I suspect this is related to the loss of the Face The Chatter function of the Tab key.

Update: not borked, just needlessly tortured

Thanks Suezanne, I had not been able to supply myself with any rationale for this needless ruination of a Good Thing. I have also found that the new sequence is this, to turn to and then speak to the Chatter: ESC, TAB, ENTER. ESC gets rid of the chat bar, TAB turns you to look at the Chatter, and ENTER brings back the chat bar.

From one key press, to three key presses. Not a big deal, huh? Well, I think it is. Is the implementation of this unpleasant 3 for 1 deal a preparation for some really cool stuff down the line? I hope so, because otherwise, it's not worth it. I don't use the tool bar, I would never TAB to get from one function to the next on it, even if I did use the tool bar (I mouse to things on all tool bars, in every program I use).

Personally, I think that Linden Labs have engaged some very good smart UI programmers, but everyone can make mistakes. Engineers often do, when they fail to think thoroughly about the users.

Linden Labs: Your Preview testing ought to include the following: During the Preview, invitations to users to come to an onsite (in San Francisco, or wherever) laboratory, so that your programmers can watch us use the things that the programmers design. Record our screams and grunts of frustration, our key strokes, anything you want. You have to see us in action to understand just how much frustration can come about by things like this unpleasant 3 for 1 deal.

Please. :)

PS You have to have no subwindows open for this to work. No IM window, no camera control, etc. Only the mini-map can be open. Otherwise, TAB cycles through the options of that window, which apparently has grabbed TAB for its own nefarious uses.
