This is a request to all those that are successfully streaming movies from YOUR computer or at least one's you have prepared and uploaded to a high bandwidth host! Please share with the rest of us frustrated and almost bald from pulling hair out people EXACTLY how you get your movies to format/prepare and play every time. I would get a xvid/avi in most cases, convert to MP4 (to strip out the xvid component, because alot of folks dont have that codec), then convert to streaming hinted movie. This file would then be placed on a computer tied to a T1 , running windows Xp SP2, hosted by IIS 5.0. While I can play these movies via QT from a different computer, most folks cannot. I'm desperate to know why!!! Please share the love!

I used Cleaner 6 on the Quicktime > NTSC > SV3NTSC 768k DSL streaming setting for the movie on my land.
I then uploaded the movie to my server running Quicktime Streaming Server.
In the media section of my land I called it as rtsp://server:80/Directory/Movie.mov
The :80 is to make sure the connection can get through firewalls, I have my Quicktime server to stream rtsp over port 80 in addtion to the normal port.

Thank you for responding. I was using Darwin to stream, but was still having the same issues with file format I believe. Will this method work from a standard HTTP:// connection?

I have not tried to host a movie on a plain webserver, let me do that now with a test file. Works similar to the other method. I used http://servername/directory/filename.mov instead of rtsp on port 80. It doesnt play as well but that could be because I did not encode my test file for this.

I went to get Quicktime Pro but I got Quicktime Pro 7 which I can't even use for SL. So basically I am stuck? I have software to take it and make it a format. Problem is it can't be viewed in SL for some reason. So I have to convert the format to MPEG4, but how do I do that? What do I need to do that exactly. I just want to have my own person collection of things to watch when im bored lol. Gotta love the Simpsons. How exactly would I do it though?

Quicktime Pro should be able to convert your files for you.
I dont have a key for 7 so I can not tell you the exact workflow to use.
However I believe you open your file with it, Make sure that Quicktime can read it, then go to file export or maybe file save as and then pick what you want the format to be and if you want the file to be hinted or not.
I have version 7 of quicktime and it is working fine for SL for video playback.

Ok so I think it's been established a movie can run off a standard http: connection (all of Apple.com's trailers are streamed from http).
I have movies that show they're mp4 (under movie properties, video format). SL says it will play anything QT will play, but these fail miserably. So i export to hinted streaming and still nada through SL (although they play in QT).
Whats up with this?

Gog - I picked up Cleaner 6 and am very impressed with its abilities, but tell me, is the process of converting a video this slow for you? Even QT's export was much faster than this. I've got a movie converting here and it's only half way thru the conversion and it's been about 4 hours to convert 30 minutes of video

Sorry for the delay.
On my Dual G4 it can take longer than a day to convert a video.

Wow, that's like ultra mega slow and hardly worth doing anymore. As well, I used the setup you recommended for Cleaner 6 Gog and it just sits there on a grey screen when loaded into SL

Just to make sure, Your hosting your files on a Darwin Streaming server or Quicktime Streaming server and not just some webspace somewhere doing a progressive download?
If you want to send me a small test file I can put it on my Darwin Streaming Server and try to view it.
Can Quicktime view the file you created when you open the url of the file in it?

No, as I said, I *was* using Darwin but since I do web development on this machine I had to switch back to HTTP:
And when I used Darwin half the movies I tried to play would just crash SL immediately. I realized later it only did this when I was trying to play movies that still were encoded as divx but were saved as QT's .mov format.
Now, I'm using IIS 5.0 (standard setup) with a dedicated movie folder.
The movies are mp4 based but saved as .mov's in hinted streaming.
What I get is a grey screen in SL, and on QT it just shows "Loading" forever. I'm assuming this means it's not actually 'hinted' or 'streaming' but rather trying to load the whole thing before playing.
What I dont get is that all of Apple.com's trailers are all streaming from an HTTP connection, yet they start immediately. It has to be in how I'm settign up the encoding.

There are problems with streaming that can crash the client, though it has been improved a lot.

all around newbie asks
07-15-2005 21:08
i am new to Sl and about to get my computer back with my Vegas video on it
it can export to QT, but I have a few questions
anyone familair with vegas? anything I need to do to render the video for SL?
I've never tried, but how can I rip scenes from DVD to edit elements for use in SL? Does ripping from DVD require extra software? Any gnu software that does this or all commercial?
what is the best file quality to render as for SL? I can render in HD, tho it hardly seems wise/prudent/fast/small. I obviously dont want to have a huge file for bandwidth/loading time reasons, but I dont want to make it so low it pixelates
anyone seen or written a faq or wiki on video? I have yet to see one
did i just use up all my monthly newbie question stipend in 1 post?
ty in advance
