Twice earlier today I was able to log on to SL V1.7 both times the Account balance in the top bar of the window displayed a singe digit number ( L$5 )when the correct balance was over L$5,600.

From what I have read in some other threads, it seems to be a known bug in the Mac client that it drops the digits after the comma on the L$ display in the upper right corner. Mine's doing it too - shows L$1 when I should have over L$1,900. But I checked my account history, and my balance is correct there. I've turned in a bug report on it. If you aren't on Mac, please submit one as well.

Linden Labs said, in response to my bug report, that this will be fixed in the 1.7.1 release, due out tomorrow. It is a bug that affects Mac OS X 10.3 users, and they figured out how to resolve it.
